The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is conducting an oral health survey.

The Health Unit will contact about 400 people via the telephone at random over the next week to help it evaluate the success of their oral health program.

Epidemiologist Lee Sieswerda said the survey will ask a number of questions to help improve the program as they move forward into the New Year.

They will also be asking the public what they think of adding fluoride to the city's drinking water, now that city council has turned down the idea.

Sieswerda added that they will have their final results in the next month. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

I hope they call me. This flouride thing is DEAD, leave it alone in peace. I shouldnt be surprised though, this is just more propoganda from a mindless big brother. Why would they not try to prove their case, instead of falling back on their typical refrain of "trust us, we know whats best". The answer seems obvious, they cant.

The Health Unit still doesn't get it. The MAJORITY of people don't want flouride in their drinking water. Quit wasting your resources that could be utilized better on something else. Perhaps it's time for a house cleaning at the health unit to hire employees without their own agendas.

AJ47, I think the point of doing the survey is to find out what the citizens of Thunder Bay think about fluoride. Then we will know if the majority of citizens oppose or support fluoridation. I say, put it to a vote on the next municipal ballot. Let the people decide.
And, gord, if you had gone to the city council debate on water fluoridation you would know that plenty of proof was provided for the benefits of water fluoridation. Not one person simply said "trust us, we know whats best". The kooks were the anti-fluoridators, who simply repeated what they'd read on paranoid anti-fluoride internet sites.

tbcitizen...

This issue has been on a municipal plebiscite & has been brought up numerous times over the years. The answer is always "NO" yet it keeps popping up. They just won't accept that answer. Your comment about the "kooks" is uncalled for. The same comment can be said for some of the pro-flouridators. It's a contentious issue that needs to be put to rest & not revisited over & over by the side that loses & refuses to accept it.

How much you wanna bet that the "Survey" will find that the people of Thunder Bay want fluoride? The "Unit" will manipulate any data to make it convienently fit "their" agenda". Plebicites have been held before and the answer is NO! What part don't they get, the n or the o?

tbcitizen: interesting that you assumed I wasnt at the council meeting. For the record, I have done my own research, since I prefer to be informed before making decisions. I dont think Flouride is evil or inherently destructive or damaging. I think the issue has less to do with the potential effectiveness of flouride itself, and more to do with the method of application. Putting it in drinking water is a horribly inefficient way to apply flouride and a waste of money.

Screw fluoride. Add dental coverage to OHIP.

tbcitizen.. if you hadn't noticed there was plenty of pro-fluoride propaghanda forced upon the people of thunder bay. I was at the council meeting that night, and there was plenty of fear-mongering from the pro side, in particular the presentation which on every slide included a gruesome picture of rotten teeth. You can talk about bad teeth all day long and it does not justify using the water system as a drug delivery conduit. And I beleive that Dr. Ira Kirschen, head of the Ontario Dental Association who did quite the dance when I asked him what the chemical name of the actual additive to be added to the water, did in fact say that we should trust the word of a certain public health figurehead whose name escapes me. In other words, Dr. Kirschen said "trust this person, he knows best."

So don't point fingers.

Whatever we do dental care should not be under OHIP. Why should I have to pay for people's teeth when they are to ignorant to look after them themselves.
If you don't want fluoride, fine, but don't look for my tax dollars to fix the teeth of your children or yourselves because you don't know how to take care of them. Just go to Intercity and see what people shove in their faces and what their kids eat. I am positive that the majority don't go and clean their teeth afterwards either.
With or without fluoride, if you don't educate people to look after their mouths, they will be in dentures soon anyhow.

I required orthodontic work when I was younger but couldn't get it because my family couldn't afford it. No amount of brushing and flossing would have prevented it from happening. Dental health is part of overall health and it is a shame that our province doesn't realize that.

Is this how the Health Unit wastes taxpayers money? Continually pushing for poisoning our water supply should be the least of their worries. This has been proven in many countries to cause bone disease, weaken bones and it is believed to have caused bone cancer. Do these people not have other ways of making money without destroying our health? I am sure this has all come about because of some lazy parents that would rather feed their kids junk food instead of a nourishing 3 healthy meals a day; which I might add is less expensive than the processed garbage and boxes of junk food given to them each day.
