Snow leads to dozens of crashes

Local police officers responded to almost 30 vehicle collisions since 4 p.m. Tuesday. Thunder Bay Police Service reports that its car crash count is up to 28 as drivers continues navigating roads following the area’s first significant snow fall. Most of the crashes reported are described as fender-benders. In response to the snow and the crashes that followed, Thunder Bay Police Service have sent out its tip for having a safe winter season:
- Slow down – drive according to the conditions.
- Allow more space between you and other vehicles.
- Anticipate your stops – start slowing down before you get to the intersection.
- Check your tires for proper inflation and tread depth.
- Snow tires are the best option for winter driving.
- Clear your windows before you drive.
- Limit your travel if the snow begins to fly.
- Keep your distractions while driving to a minimum.
If you become involved in a collision, police ask you to remember the following: - Any collision with injury or combined damage of more than $1,000 must be reported to police immediately.
- Call police for direction and assistance as to how to best report the collision.
- You may be directed to report to the Collision Reporting Centre at 1200 Balmoral Street.
