Police make car-shopping arrest

Police arrested a suspect after another spree of petty thefts from vehicles in the city’s south end Friday.

Thunder Bay Police setup a neighbourhood-policing unit in the area of the Fort William Gardens in response to a report that several vehicles had been broken into the week before during a hockey game.

Officers spotted a male suspect attempting to enter several vehicles that were parked at a lot near 901 Miles Street. Officers arrested the suspect.

Police then discovered that a number of vehicles in the area had been broken into. Officers charged the suspect with five counts of attempted theft under $5,000, one count of theft under $5,000 and three counts of mischief under $5,000.

Police also charged the suspect with possession of burglary tools.

The arrest led police to renew a warning to motorists to lock their doors when leaving vehicles parked. Police are also asking motorists to remove valuables from their parked vehicles. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

I understand and agree about the warning of not leaving valuables in my car, but, if the thieves are carrying burglary tools, then would it not be more beneficial to leave my door unlocked so they don't damage my car in the process of breaking into it?

It's good to see the Police getting this guy,But Police need to beef up there patrols around the city as more,and more Vehicles are getting broken into around the city,Police can say lock up doors all you want,If someone wants to get into your car badly they will,My sister-in-law had her window smashed in on her car,My wife had her car broken into 5 times last year and her doors where locked and ever thing good she took out of the car,and her car still got broken into.One of the mornings i saw three guys who where breaking into cars in my where i live, and right away i phoned the Police,By the time the Police showed up the three guys that where breaking into cars in my area where long gone.

Our area was a 'targeted' area for vehicle break ins and Break and enters into people homes. We suspected that people were looking into our vehicle so we took every thing out of it and left the doors open so that people wouldn't break in the windows. We knew that they were there because the glove box would be open and suspected that they were lowly thieves looking to make a couple bucks and we weren't too worried about theft of the car itself. It might be easier for people to leave there cars open and take everything inside, if they find that your car doesn't have anything then they'll know there is nothing there and leave it alone.

The fact that cars are broken in during games and other events should make it pretty obvious that some breakins are going to occur. It is the same if there is a drinking event going on at Old Fort William - dont the police set up a Ride Program. My question is what took them so long. Maybe Bill Scollie was correct - a little slow on the draw these TB cops.

Of course I wouldnt know if thats true, my vehicles are garage kept and I rarely leave them anywhere where they are likely targets. I like to rely on personal responsibility before the insurance company...but Im crazy that way.

at least the cops got one..for that Im happy.

SandHawk: How are the police going to step up patrols? They use 100 percent of their available resources and manpower. If the chief would listen to Keith Hobbs and go to 12 hour shifts (4 on, 4 off), and decrease the number of special officers/increase proportionally the number of frontline officers, I think you would see a lot less of this type of crime.

Believe me, people rifling through cars isn't the crime of the century and when there are more important calls to go to, the police will go to those first!
