LU searching for $36M funding

Lakehead University's Board of Governors has called a news conference for this Wednesday morning.

It's expected the board will introduce the school's new president, to replace the outgoing Dr. Fred Gilbert. Gilbert is schedule to retire in May. Meanwhile, LU is looking for $36 million from the McGuinty government for a new research facility.

At last week's provincial budget consulatation, LU vice-president Michael Pawloski asked the Finance Minister to fund the proposed forest research building, called Biofor. It would be located next to the Innovation Centre on Balmoral Street.

Pawloski says the University needs a designated space to house their equipment and researchers.

The centre would house 50 researchers and grad students.

A decision is not expected until the provincial budget comes down in March. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

So let me get this straight. Con college, FPInnovation, and the province are well on their well to developing CRIBE (center for research in the bio economy) and rather than work together LU is putting effort into not only planning BioFor but also into lobbying the province to spend $36 million on it. Please oh please do not fund this initiative. LU is spending money on building educational infrastructure in southern Ontario while our campus crumbles and they have the nerve to plan this. Believe me the way the forestry program at LU is going they will have an abundance of space for their research equipment in the empty classrooms. I hope there were some more feasible and meaningful proposals at th budget consultations. There are alot of great ideas in Thunder Bay but this isn't one of them.

Duplication upon duplication, oh to build empires these days seems to be the in thing to do.

When will educated people get the message that we cannot fill you loot bags this halloween, the price of the candy this year could not be justified with the payback to the tooth fairy.

Red sky the collage and the university are very much partners. They are working together to make the bio economy viable in Thunder Bay, the only problem is that how many university professors work in a collage lab? They need the space to conduct there own experiments and to teach there own classes. This will make the forestry classes at LU more sucessful and should be looked at as an investment into our community. LU takes very good care of its buildings and it always trying to become a leader in the country. LU and the collage are both very important part in the community and should be looked at so. These two sites hold the #3 and #8 slots in the city for largest employers. Fred Gilbert is no dummy either so if its gonna help the university then its gonna be a good use of money.

Dont worry , they'll find it by soliciting everyone they can who can secure government funding for their education.

The more people with a university degree there is, the more cheapened it becomes. LU's antics leaves them circling the bowl, and we all know what happens next.

Forestry? For some reason that stikes me as a little passe. What about mining related research? I though the forestry industry was fading away.

WHATS THE PROBLEM ?

1) I doubt any announcement will be made before Duncan brings down the budget in March, but why look a gift horse in the mouth?

2) Research tends to follow the money, and right now the province is giving the green light for Bio-Fuel research.

3) If we can get $36 Million, it will come from Toronto. Not your pocket. (We are less than 1% of Ontario's population)

4) It is good for L.U. and what is good for L.U. is good for Thunder Bay.

5) This research may in time pave the way for a re-birth in the forestry sector, which will benefit everyone on the north shore.

Abra, Forestry is far from fading, it's in slump like any natural resource but it will be back although not likely with it's previous focus. The bio-economy, value added products from the forest and others will all need people with a good understanding of the applied science of forests and forestry.
The Forestry program at L.U. is an applied science degree, teaches everything from chromosomes to chainsaws and as an applied science degree makes a great base degree for someone to go on to another degree program such as teaching, law or even the med school.
I'm a graduate of the LU HBScF and many of my fellow grads went on to successfull careers and vocations that have little or nothing to do with Forestry.
