The controversial new breakthrough in finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis was the topic of discussion at an information session held in Thunder Bay Monday.

The local chapter of the MS Society held a meeting Monday evening to discuss the findings of Italian Professor Paolo Zamboni regarding chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency.

Zamboni's discovery found that the flow of blood and the high iron in the blood provoked the progression of MS.

His hypothesis stated unclogging certain veins through surgery could possibly cure or prevent the disease.

Director of the local chapter of the MS Society, Dr. Bill Brown, says this is an astonishing discovery because up until now, medical experts believed MS could only be treated by drugs.

Professor Zamboni discovered the venous hypertension after his wife was diagnosed with MS in 1995. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

Possibly good news. M.S. seems to effect a greater number of people who live at higher latitudes, such as Thunder Bay, so public awareness is a good first step in fighting this disease.

Thunder Bay is only at 200m above MSL. That isn't very high. In terms of pressure, it is almost negligible.
