Former Marathon Pulp owner ordered to cleanup

A former owner of the Marathon Pulp mill has been told to help cover the cost of an environmental cleanup at the mill site.
The Ministry of the Environment says Ball Packaging is among the companies that shares responsibility for major pollution in the Peninsula Harbour.
The Ministry sent a notice of intent to issue a director's order to the company last week. After reviewing documents on a related matter, the Ministry found Ball Packaging responsible for discharging mercury and dangerous PCB chemicals into Lake Superior during its ownership of the operation prior to 1983.
The Ministry wants the now U.S.-based company to help clean up the mess and provide financial assurance in the form of $6 million.
Ball Packaging has a 30-day public period to consult with lawyers and make a plan for cleaning up the pollution.
Marathon Pulp is also being held liable in the cleanup effort.
