Tuesday’s warm weather is not what the organizers of a local sporting event were looking for this week.

The North American iceboat championship is stuck in neutral due to lack of wind on Lake Superior. The opening ceremonies were held Tuesday morning near Silver Harbour, with representatives from Canada, the U.S., Germany and Poland all raising their country's flags.

One person who had hoped to race Tuesday was Sam Myers, who is the youngest participant in the event at 15 years of age. He said sailing along the ice at speeds of 100-to-140 kilometres per hour is an amazing experience.

Wind conditions are expected to pick up in the next few days.

The ice boat races are now planned to start Wednesday and wrap up by the end of the week. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

ICE BOATS ROCK

Nothing I have experienced, including the Bobsled run at Lake Placid, compares to the sensation of speed of an ice boat. There is something about the roar of the blades over a frozen lake that stays with you. They take-off like a rocket, turn on a dime, and can achieve amazing speeds in even light winds.

I am surprised that this affordable sport is not big in Thunder Bay. Lord knows we have lots of frozen lakes. Also it is the kind of sport that appeals to people who are good with their hands. Many of the boats are hand built from kits. Thanks tbnewswatch for promoting this great sport.

This will be a cool event to watch once it gets started! Now this is the kind of tourism events that bring visitors to our city - not useless monuments on the waterfront!!
