Three people face charges after police busted a suspected marijuana grow op Wednesday.

Officers from the Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit searched a Rowand Street home in Thunder Bay Wednesday afternoon. Officers found a total of 20 marijuana plants, which police believe have an estimated street value of $20,000.

Two women, aged 44 and 18 years old, were arrested at the home. A 51-year-old man surrendered to police later that evening.

All three were residents of the Rowand Street home that police searched.

All three suspects have been charged with production of a controlled substance.

The Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit consists of members from the Thunder Bay Police Service, OPP, RCMP, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and the Anishinabek Police Service.

Way to go tri-force! I sometimes wonder why our resources are being wasted on these small-timers? If you research a typical full-scale grow-op they contain thousands of plants, not 20. Maybe these folks didn't have the resources to grease the right wheels in the machine. As far as I'm concerned this is smoke and mirrors to distract those who don't know any better into thinking it's a job well done.

drdolittle if you willing to give me 20,000 then ill gladly take it. I do find it sad that the mom, dad and daughter were growing pot together. Sounds like a fun family activity, but in all seriousness 20,000 might not be the biggest but look at the past couple months. ! million here, 40,000 here and now 20,000 that takes a cut into the local drug supply. The only problem is when the supply dwindles prices go up, and then crime follows. Its a nasty cycle.

Getting drugs off the streets is always a good thing, but there are bigger fish to fry. However, the worst thing affecting young adults is alcohol, and it's legal. To me, that is the gateway drug, to all cultures.

I think the real crime here is that the estimated street value of a single plant is $1000.

You're all loopy! Its just a plant! ...and never worth $1000 per plant! OMG! Try taking some pills off the streets....lazy cops. (btw...why don't any of my posts make it online?)

wow, $20,000 worth of plant taken off the street. This will make no difference in demand, only a difference in supply. Pot is a weed and it always grows back. We'll be hearing about grow op busts forever because these activities will never go away. Why not tax the substance so we can afford hire more officers get the drunks off the street and into rehab. That's a bigger problem in this City.

imchino: your posts probably don't make it on line because you either A) swear to much or B)don't make any sense. I'll go with both. Question for you though...why are the cops lazy? They are doing what they are trained and paid to do...remove an illegal drug from the streets. Until pot becomes legal, the cops will expend a certain amount of resources to find it and remove it. The law is the law. It is not for the police to make new laws or to Qtion the ones that are in place. They took an oath of some kind. Those who are bitching about the pot getting seized are likely users themselves or people who just don't get the purpose of having cops. I is their JOB! DUH!

Finally the voices of reason - Thanks drdolittle and imchino. As TWM points out alcohol is probably the most dangerous drug of all. I would add that it is a factor in many, many, many more crimes, it is more rampant than the use of any other drug (except perhaps nicotine and tranquilizers?) and is responsible for many, many, many more deaths than weed ever will be.

The other thing I would add is that people growing 20 plants are never going to be rich. The value is terribly inflated in these articles. Chances are these people grow weed because they smoke it themselves.

The Police and media always inflate the value of all their claims. They're trying for that "shock value" so they can justify their existence and put themselves on a pedestal.

fools fall for it. bigger fools applaud it.

I believe that all the pro-pot group here are showing their ignorance to the real story here. The story is about a family that is growing enough marijuana to traffic with an 18 year old being part of the operation. With this they exposed thier child to the underground economy, illegal drugs, tax evaision and probably exposure to low-lifes and hard core drug addicts and trafficers who have purchased the marijuana (i'm sure some of their customers were just plain citizens though). Now I try not to swear in front of my kids so you can see where I lie on the scale of exposing my kids and participating in illegal activities.

@baor...Cops are lazy because they are going for the easy pickings! Cannabis users are the most peacfull folks you'll ever meet. They never put up a fight physically and usually cant afford to put up a fight legally. I'd like to see some violent offenders takin off the streets...not hippies! Just because a law is still in effect doesn't mean it isn't stupid. For instance...In Canada "Citizens may not publicly remove bandages"..This is a real law! Know anyone using Direct TV? Thats still against the law! Just because you think something is bad, does not make it so. Cannabis is a beautiful flower w/ great benefits. Find some real problems to whine about! I'm off to enjoy some nice herb and some fresh air. Peace!

Also, has it occurred to you pro-pot people that the reason alcohol abuse and its problems are more prevalent is because alcohol IS LEGAL? Law abiding citizens can buy it anywhere..

marijuana abuse and related problems from it would increase if it was made legal.

but it doesnt tell you that on a pack of ZigZags either right?

$20K is chicken feed in the big picture for sure and I'm sure that it's inflated for the potential and not the actual but here's a thought, IF these people were renters and it's likely that they were given that neighbourhood, then the land lord perhaps will not have to go through the same ordeal as the homeowners of the Hunter road grow op. If that's the case, good work Tri Force.
We have seen sizeable busts of ocxy, pot and other drugs over that last few months, I guess it all adds up but in the long run it's like trying to shovel a basement with a teaspoon. Must be disheartening for those trying to enforce the laws.
