A new senior’s facility will be getting an expansion, the province confirmed Thursday.

Bethammi Nursing Home’s 109 beds will be rebuilt into the soon to be constructed Centre of Excellence for Integrated Senior’s Services, bringing the total number of long-term care beds at the facility to 445. St. Joseph’s Care Group CEO Tracy Buckler said CEISS, at 64 beds per floor, will now be eight stories when it’s built.

She said while Bethammi could have been retrofitted to meet provincial standards, the 109 beds will be a welcomed addition to the CEISS. The long-term care beds will be private and semi-private, something the Bethammi home couldn’t provide, Buckler said.

"It’s great news to coincide with our centre of excellence program that we can build all of our long-term care on one site," said Buckler.

Originally an $80-million project when first announced last December, Buckler said the additional $18-million construction estimates bring the total price tag of CEISS to nearly $100 million.

Bethammi is more than 30 years old but still structurally sound, Buckler said. She added that it’s future will be determined soon.

"We have to meet the needs of the community," Buckler said. "I don’t want to see Bethammi staying empty."

MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay –Atikokan) said the CEISS project and Bethammi rebuild are separate projects that will move ahead at the same time. Although Buckler confirmed the beds from Bethammi would be included in the CEISS, Mauro said based on his discussions in Southern Ontario, it hasn’t been decided yet.

"At this point we’re not 100 per cent sure where the beds are landing," Mauro said. "It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if it was (CEISS)."

The announcement is part of a provincial commitment to rebuild 35,000 aging long-term care beds over the next 10 years, Mauro said. The Liberal MPP also said that a retrofit is generally the same cost as building a new facility, so building new is usually better than renovating a home like Bethammi.

"To rebuild new is sometimes much more cost effective and you get a 50-to-80 year life span out of something new," Mauro said.

Mauro said because of the province’s commitment to rebuilding aging senior’s facilities, more announcements will probably be made in Thunder Bay soon.

another announcment by Mauro. Man, this guy sure is brutal. well c'mon Rick, Pawn and all you other critics. let's hear the negative spin about this one just like you guys did on the 6.4 million medical announcement. we get more construction jobs, better facilities for seniors, more money in the city. man, can you believe the nerve of this guy to keep bringing money to t.bay. i wonder if all of those construction workers hate these announcments like rick, pawn and those other critics do. I am sure some of the critics will find something to complain about. those critics can accuse me of being a cheerleader, i could care less. Me, I will just say thanks to gravelle and Mauro. keep them coming.

How nice for the government to fund these projects but why create a senior ghetto - there is where the old people go, add in some chronic ill and mix it up some mental health and addiction and displace people with disabilities. Back to segregation that I though was done with and which took over 30 years to do, by integrating seniors, people with disabilities back into the broader community to live in neighbourhoods across the city and to be closer to the general population, families and friends. No now its called Centre of Excellence. Sorry but I personally can't accept that. Oh wait - did you know the community has over 300 young, middle aged and older disabled adults forced to live in the this new modern segregated ghetto or being housed in high cost long term care institutions and acute care hospitals at daily care per diems costs of $600 - $800 up to $1500 in acute care hospital and Oh ya the tax payer is paying for this. Yet all these people want and have their names listed on community housing providers and landlords waiting lists and have had there names on these waiting lists now back as far 8 to 10 years ago. Oh ya some are living with aging parents, but soon the aging parents because of the stress will via for a place in the centre of excellence. Oh don't let me forget the home support and care program only cost the tax payer at the high end $150 dollars a day. And people want this choice to remain in their homes and in integrated community neighbourhoods where they are not stared at like some freak that has to be put out of sight. Oh, don't let me forget its known as economy of scale having this super large segregated institutional site. But ya it brought a 100 million in capital costs, it will improve and provide barrier free facilities, but you still got to fund the personal support care at 5 to 10 times higher daily care per diem costs you the tax payer is paying.
But don't forget with Ontario government budget deficit in health care Dwight Duncan the honourable finance minister says there is no new money to fund the community home care provider agencies who do an excellent job keeping people living in there homes with supported independance.
Oh he is just crabbing? Well let me tell you, as of February 1st we were told by the NWLHIN (they are the experts on issuing the Ministry of Health annual budget dollars distributating it out to health care institutions and community care provider agencies (yes your tax dollars, dollars that the Finance Minister says there is no more of)they are no new dollars for community care for the next three years. Add another three years to wait lists. Don't forget NWLHIN will spend another few million to pay to do some planning and come up with some reports on how to fix the problems - oh I am forgetting these few million dollars might provide community care for 20/30 on wait list who only now have waited 8 years in a institution to find a home and get back to supportive community living. But lets top it off with the TBDSSB who administer social housing capital dollars and community rent subsidies dollars having no budget to assist willing private housing developers and landlords provide new housing stock that would not cost the capital dollars being spent by health on institutional facilities. Oh I forgot a new DSSB building for staff is needed at what is it - 10 to 11 million - but we will do a study to find out what the need is - ya but you got these long wait lists already identifying the people pleading for community housing and to have a choice of living in the community and not being forced to live in the institution.
Sorry - but the story can get longer so I will stop here. But please lets do some better community planning and Bill/Michael - the government is not deinstitulizing - they are listening to the wrong experts and we are right to building largen segregated institutions at uncontrolable tax payer costs. Oh don't let me forget - hang tough to the middleaged person now being invoiced $1500 daily per diem by a regional government funded acute care small hospital in a small town in the region. The person is being invoiced $45,000 monthly starting September 2009 and last we spoke the bill had accummulated over $250,000 - so much for universal health care. Or am I mistaken is this Canada or the United States?

What you always refer to as negative spin is far more reaching.

Lets go back to the days when he was a sitting member of city council. The issue of long term care beds being in short supply is an old story, where have you been.?

The moneys earmarked and set aside to deal with the construction of new facilities years ago was not spent as they should have been.

I could go on and on, but with you being a cheerleader it would serve no purpose, you refuse to see things for what they are, individuals such as yourself need to "UN-LEARN" first and then we might be able to achieve some progress into understanding what goes on behind closed doors.

If for one second you think that this is going to address the issue of the shortage, it is not, and that is the issue of long standing is what I am speaking too.

So the way in which you view this announcement is what.?

Better late than never.?

so rick, your hatred of Mauro goes back to his council days. WOW, you do have a problem. so let me see if I understand you. Somehow a northwood councilor in 1997-2000 was supposed to fix the bed shortage. I mean, I thought you had issues, but now, you are just proving how much you are filled with hate.

So, this different announcement, that mondernizes the living conditions for seniors is somehow tied to when Mauro was on council. You will grab at anything. do you remember anything else back then Rick. I was in the medical field back then and it was Mauro who created a position to try and recruit doctors to the city. so, since he was on council, health care seems to have been a priority. Oh, there I go being a cheerleader again. Better a cheerleader, then an insultive bore who has nothing better to do then lable half-baked insults and innuendo. So Rick, write to the paper, sign your name and say this announcment was bad. Tell the rest of the public that this is not good for seniors or our construction workers. Tell the city that you Rick have all of the answers and that this is just wrong. a knowledgable guy like you Rick shouldn't have any problem doing that.

Your animosity ( look it up if you need it defined ), is so blatant, so incredible, that it is clear to me what your agenda is. I am sure leading up to the next election we will be hearing much more from you at every chance, no matter how wrong it might be. easy to hide behind an anonymous blog to level your insultive tirades. I guess that is how cowardice is defined. geez, i wonder what third party you belong to
