The Cascades Conservation Area is open to visitors following a temporary closure that began in mid February.

Work crews have spent the past two weeks clearing out trees damaged during last September's wind storm.

Conservation Authority chairman Bill Bartley said the work wrapped up about a week ahead of schedule.

Seedlings will be planted this spring and summer at Cascades to replace the damaged trees. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

The Conservation Authority should be commended in taking this action to protect the safety of visitors to the area. Hopefully the cut wood was put to good use.
I wonder if they will solicit volunteers to help with the replanting. I would gladly assist to replant in this well used recreation area. It's a great spot to visit, summer and winter.

If they truly were into "conservation" as their name implies, they would have left the trees where mother nature put them.

Eco-terrorism exists in many forms. Funny how one side gets to be more "right" than another.

Probably another comment that wont make it huh?

Pie, did you look at this site that they cleared? After the windstorm of September last year this area had substantial damage. Lots of over mature poplar came down or was hung up and some of the damage brought some large jackpine with it.This poplar was largely useless and the amount of salvage from the pine would not nearly cover the cost of the hazard tree removal.
This area that they cleared of hazards is around the main parking area and the start of the many walking trails and is a very popular spot for people to get out and enjoy.

You're getting to cynical, starting to see corruption in every news posting.

If anything, the question should have been asked as why it took so long for the CA to act on removing the hazards, or why the area was not closed all winter until the problem could be addressed. If someone had been hurt by one of these hung up trees coming down the liability would be on the CA and the people on this forum would have been out for blood.
