The province outlined a five-year plan to help grow the Ontario government in its throne speech Monday.

From pledging more seats for colleges and universities to creating almost one million jobs over the next decade, MPP Michael Gravelle said the speech had numerous references that could benefit Northwestern Ontario.

He said he was excited and encouraged by references to mining in particular.

"We do know that the Ring of Fire presents the most promising mining opportunity in Canada in the last century and it’s right there in Northwestern Ontario" Gravelle said. "We’re talking about thousands and thousands of job opportunities that could be presented."

Gravelle said the government’s pledge to cash in on the upcoming global demand for clean water could also help stimulate job creation in the region.

"I can see the North benefiting from that in a very significant way," Gravelle said.

While the speech is general in nature, MPP Bill Mauro said he was glad to hear references to health care.

"Certainly it won’t be at the levels that it has been at for the last six years," Mauro said. "It’s still going to remain a priority."

Mauro said he is also excited to see what kind of opportunities mining activity will bring to Northwestern Ontario. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

if we're going to have such a huge significant mining area, we should strive to ALSO include the refining of those mined materials AND production of "value added" products.. if we simply mine something and ship it elsewhere, we'll be back to our current situation in a matter of years.. let's start this off with a different approach

those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it

I agree with pass lake but the government has made it clear they don't care where the refining takes place. They also didn'y mention the 8% increase in everything you buy axcept a Timmy's.Now what do they want to do, create jobs by selling our water? To the liberals down east we are still the hewers of wood and drawers of water our resources are their resources and they will do what they see fit to keep their buddies and voters down east happy.

Well this Throne speech sound like something that belongs in the Throne that I will refer to as the Crapper from which it came.

I will not be suprised one bit that Mr. Gravelle does not even run in the next election, a little birdie tells me so and for Mr. Mauro, he is going to get voted out and will be looking to his liberal supporters to hire him into their private sector.

Only time will tell all, as it usually does.

McGuinty is a man of contradiction. Last week he shot down the resource industry, and now he tells us how important it is for the economy. For the mining sector to succeed there needs to be market for the metals. The manufacturing sector is dead in the water, and with it is the market for metals, unless we can market the stuff abroad.

well, here goes Rick again. Hey Rick, you are so brilliant, so insightful, why not write that comment to one of our papers and sign it that Gravelle is probably not running next time. then the whole city can see just how dumb your remarks are. Your hatred for Mauro continues, as does your clear political motivation. It comes through every comment. But Mauro keeps bringing money from this government. He and Gravelle have brought more money here than anyone in our history, but for you Rick, it is never enough. I think I know why. I would not be surprised to find out you are an NDP hack with the same song and dance that takes place all the time. If it ain't NDP, it ain't any good. The Tories in Ottawa are back on track and I hope they call an election soon. Provincially I wouldn't give you 10 cents for the conservative party who can't make up their mind on what they believe in. They hate the HST in Toronto, but not Ottawa, and their leader won't cancel it if he is elected. I wonder why. As for the NDP, I wouldn't take a million dollars for their brand of communism, make the gov't supply everything and watch business leave in droves. As for manufacturing plants, why does this song keep getting played. The gov't doesn't build manufacturing plants, they don't make fridges, stoves, washers, private industry does that. So, if it makes good economic sense, someone will do it. If not, they won't. They are not going to sell our water, they are going to try and help create an industry that protects our water. They want to be on the cutting edge of that industry along with green energy. Feel free to criticize that decision, but to suggest they are going to sell our water is delibertately misleading. so people feel free to bring your tirades to the forum, but could you make them a little more accurate and a little less politically motivated. Well Rick should not have to do that, he doens't know any other way.

Here's a five year plan. Day one. Toss Mcguinty out of office. The rest of the 5 years will then be a breeze compared to what we are dealing with now. Start fresh. Clean house and lose the liberals.

Five Year Plans belong in Stalinist Russia.

Remember, it didn't matter how bad things were... just as long as there were hordes of party apparatchicks describing how tractor production in the Donbas would exceed next year's quota by 35%. All this against backdrops of happy workers with shiny biceps all toiling 24/7 for the State.

Of course, nothing was ever achieved and the whole system fell apart at the seams.

Watch this space.
