Police say an armed man recently broke into a south-side apartment and threatened the woman occupant.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service said Tuesday that the man entered the South Vickers Street apartment with a knife. The woman occupying the apartment told investigating officers that she did not know the intruder.

A neighbour heard the commotion and was able to scare off the would-be attacker.

No arrests have been made and police have not revealed any other details. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

before anyone starts going off on the crime being out of control - this is a part of normal urban life - i am not sure what sort of utopia we are targetting, but crime is no worse and likely better in thunder bay than most metropolitan areas that i am familiar with. There is crime everywhere people gather and the more people we have, the more crime - its simple.

Why weren't the police standing at his door anticipating something like this would happen?

Hang on Gord... on that basis crime in T/Bay should be down around 15%. Just like out population.

Or just maybe, it's NOT criminals who leave to work elsewhere???

You are incorrect Gord. Check out stats Canada. Thunder Bay is one of the most violent cities in Canada over-all. Few cities, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Abottsford, are worse. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax, virtuously every city in southern Ontario all have lower crime rates than Thunder Bay. Last year our murder rate was 2nd in ALL of Canada (per 100 000). Toronto's murder rate was less than half of ours. Food for thought.

A knife weilding intruder "a normal part of urban living" If this is normal I want no part of it!
Perhaps becoming more frequent but surely not normal.
I think this city has got to start dealing better with the frequent acts of violence, drunks and druggies being accepted as a way of life.
Today at luch time noted groups of intoxicated persons wandering along the north core. Is this the image that our tourists take home with them

There is no doubt about it - this is a very scary event and I feel for the woman who endured this. But this type of crime does not happen everyday in Thunder Bay. Yes, last year we did have a high murder rate but that number followed years of decline or no murders at all. If we are to consider all stats, how many of the murders where random acts...none. I'm sure a city like Toronto can't say that - remember a few years ago when that city was seeing murder after murder and even coined the "Summer of the Gun" phrase. I can't walk down Young Street past the Footlocker store and not think of the poor 15-year-old girl that was shot there while shopping on Boxing Day a few years ago. Thunder Bay does have it's issues but overall, I feel safe here. Having just returned from Toronto, I did see my fair share of drunks and druggies too and let's not forget the poor homeless people that you have to step over while they sleep on the sidewalk over the subway grates. I think you would be pretty hard pressed to find a city in Canada that can honestly boast low crime rates.

Here we go again..ofcourse the woman "did not know the intruder"... ya right..

And for the below comments.. you really do not know the real gang problem, murder, drug problem that goes in in bigger cities... You can goto many cities in Canada & America where people getting shot in broad day is a normal thing..

Howbout instead of commenting about the high crime rate..share some stories about the crimes that have happened to you unprovoked

I feel that the highest percentile of crime in thunder bay involves people that shouldnt be doing what there doing in the first place

ohno - had my rear truck window smashed so they could take about $3 in change, running shoes and 1/4 pack of gum, unprovoked enough?

Just curious, what kind of trouble would someone get in for shooting a home invader, self defense style? :)
