Police charged a Thunder Bay man for accessing child pornography following a major province-wide investigation.

OPP officials announced Wednesday that officers conducted 44 searches, which resulted in 122 charges against 35 people. Searches took place at locations across the province.

As a result of the investigation, a 61-year-old Thunder Bay man was charged with accessing child pornography.

Across the province, police officers charged suspects with distribution of child pornography, making child pornography, accessing child pornography, and various drug offences.

Police say addition charges are pending and that the investigation continues. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

Need names. It's time for names to be published so these sick individuals are known to the public in our community. Our safety is being jeopardized by twisted minds like this!

True names should be published, but not till they are proven guilty in court. If names are realeased and they are innocent their reputation will be damaged not matter of being innocent...

An hour ago, with the exception of 3 or 4 names (young people)) the names and the cities were made public at www.thestar.com .The names have now been removed from the Star's pages. The 61 year old's name from Thunder Bay was amongst the list of names.

We need to adopt the American Registry and have the Sex Offender registry available for public eyes, and not just officers. These criminals commit their crimes and we can't even see or know who they are because they are protected by the very laws that are meant to protect US. These people should have those rights stripped away the moment they laid hands on their victims. Then again, I'm conservative, so it could just be my conservative way of thinking. o.O

Names should only be published after they are proven guilty in my opinion. We live in Canada, everyone deserves a chance to defend themselves and publishing their names just makes everyone assume they are guilty. Maybe they really are innocent, I've heard of things happening like someone logging onto an unsecured wireless network and viewing child porn (of course the people paying for the Internet would get in trouble for it, not the person stealing their connection). In this day and age, it's important everything is investigated properly and people are proven guilty in a court of law.

And a US style public sex offender registry is a good idea although you have to be careful. For example, in the US I believe an 18 year old having sex with a 17 year old makes them a sex offender. Or I heard about a proposal to make public urination a sex offense. Canada's definition of "sex offender" is likely more stringent so these sorts of cases would be less likely, but you do need to be careful that you only embarrass true criminals who are a threat to others and not people who just do something stupid.

That's what angers ME about society today, tbay87. In regards to the 18 and 17 thing. It's like some magical number where as soon as you hit 18, you magically cross the line between a minor and an adult. Do you feel any different than you were 5 minutes ago when you were 17? Do you suddenly have this strange power of knowing right and wrong suddenly? Age limits (for certain things) are unbelievably stupid in my opinion. "oh, she's 17 until tomorrow and you didn't wait, you're a sex offender." or "I can't let you in here because you're 18 years old for the next 5 minutes." It's like some kind of invisible barrier that only comes down when you magically hit a certain number.

"The law includes a “close-in-age” provision of five years, which means it would be legal for a 15-year-old to have relations with a 19-year-old provided the relationship is not exploitive and the older party is not in a position of authority or trust."

This has been around for 2 years now guys!

In the US if you're caught pissing in a bush down a back alley, you get tossed on the Sex Offender Registry and your life is basically ruined. It would be great if they kept said registry for actual sex offenders.

Im usually part of the "named and shamed" mob here, but when it comes to internet or electronic crimes (if thats what this was) I think people need to make sure they dont jump to conclusions...because the potential for mistakes is large.

Hopefully they built a strong case, rather than just a witch hunt.

FIRST
totally agree with all who say names should NOT be published until no doubt about guilt.
I also hope this is NOT a witch hunt cuz the way the internet works now GARBAGE pops up all the time EMAIL, LINKS ect.. when you dont want it, example GOOGLE something and 9 out of 10 times PORN will be there you could be just googling your name sheesh .
BUT now if guilty of child porn or any crime I do agree names should be YELLED to the world to SHAME the criminal and ADVISE the public.
Someone into child porn SHOULD NEVER be ALLOWED to work any where NEAR CHILDREN, if they do TERMINATED immediately no pension or any severance. SAME for alot of crime. The way OUR JUSTICE system is now Doesnt work. TOO MANY REPEAT OFFENDERS and TOO LITTLE REHABILITATION.
