AbitibiBowater investigates power generation

A project being proposed by AbitibiBowater in Thunder Bay could see the mill producing more than 60 per cent of its own energy needs.

A project being proposed by AbitibiBowater in Thunder Bay could see the mill producing more than 60 per cent of its own energy needs.

The company is looking to install a condensing turbine, associated generator and cooling tower to support existing electricity generation.

The company held an open house Wednesday on the Fort William First Nation, detailing the project. Doug Murray is the General Manager of Abitibi Bowater's Thunder Bay operations and he said the estimated cost of the project is $51-million.

However, the company is in the process of applying for funding from senior levels of government to help offset some of those costs.

The facility has a number of hurdles to jump through to get the project off the ground.

Murray said the company must go through a screening process, fine tune capital costs, get government approval and exit bankruptcy protection.

Another open house will be held Thursday at the Travelodge Hotel Airline and is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m.
