Both of Thunder Bay’s MPs say their expenses are online for all constituents to see but would have been fine with the Auditor General taking a closer look.

The comments come after parliament’s all-party Board of Internal Economy rejected a request from Shelia Fraser to look into the $533 million spent by members of the House of Commons and Senate. MP John Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) said MPs are already closely watched and aren’t as free to expense things the way MPs in other countries can.

"I wouldn’t have any problem either way," Rafferty said. "But you know that’s the decision that the board has made and that’s OK."

Rafferty added that if a constituent wants to determine whether they are getting value for their money, one of Fraser’s main reasons for requesting the audit, all they have to do is go online and see the expenses for themselves.

From April 1, 2008 to March 31 2009, Rafferty spent $128,059 on his office budget with the largest $96,512 expense being staff. His goods and services budget was $86,180 with $55,193 going to travel.

MPP Bruce Hyer (NDP, Thunder Bay-Superior North) spent $150,386 for his office budget during the same period with $119,973 going to staff. A total of $42,840 of his $77,287 goods and services budget went to travel.

Hyer said MPs already face two expense audits, but said he would have been happy to subject himself to a third round. Hyer said MPs are also audited by the public.

"It’s a little bizarre to have an employee of the Parliament auditing her boss. I think we get audits in terms of value from the voters every time there’s an election," Hyer said.

Hyer said the real issue is that MPs in larger geographic areas don’t have enough money to represent their constituencies effectively.

He added that it’s ironic that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has frozen expenses for MPs while the Prime Minister’s Office expenses has been raised 13 per cent.

"The irony here is that I don’t have adequate funds to do the job adequately in my riding given the number of communities and the size of the riding," Hyer said.

My response to the story about Michael Ignatieff titled "Every Receipt" remains the same:

Sheila Fraser is correct. She is an auditor and wants to have the public rest assured that the MP's and hopefully MPP's are accountable to the people, us, who pay their wages and expense accounts.

If any of these elected people are honest, they will turn over their receipts to be audited and cleared of any perceived wrong doing.

If they don't....perhaps it is not a perception on the taxpayers behalf.

As always, this is just my opinion.

These people work with money payed and trusted to them by the taxpayer. Why is it a big deal for the person who gave them the money to know how it is being spent? We pay ur salary and when we want to know how u spent the rest of ur half a billion dollars then we should get it

I can't believe what I just read. A socialist at that saying he doesn't believe a employee referring to the Auditor General who represents ALL CANADIAN`S IN OVERSEEING HOW OUR TAX DOLLARS are being spent on what and by whom, should be and uses the word BIZARRE auditing their boss referring to the members of Parliament of which he is one. Should we remind this gentleman who the boss is and who pays not only his salary but pays the bills as well .The vast majority of Canadians want the auditor general to do her job and audit the expenses of our employees the members of parliament and that includes our two members representing the Thunder Bay ridings of.Frankly this long time Federal Taxpayer finds the Members comment rather bizzare. Most Socialists I know represent the interests of the employees and NOT the BOSSES!!

Haha..
I love how this is surprising to some people.

Has there ever been an honest government in the last few hundred years?

And you guys all think the governments ok and trustable.

The whole system is failed. it needs to be re designed from the ground up with all new people.

If you look you can see that Canada has adopted ALL of the planks of the communist manifesto...

Which makes canada a democratic communism with revolving leaders instead.
Why? Because people overthrow tyrants.
Get a new PM and the old ones evil still lingers, but the people now have noone to blame...

Our government currently does and has done every dirty trick that any "evil" government has done...
Just because you can pick the guys who pick the next leader does not make you free.

And remember this:
Bank of Canada is the 13th branch of the Federal Reserve.
The whole system is a scam, and you suckers bought it hook line and sinker.

I checked Mr. Rafferty's web site and, through a link, had a look at, as he describes, all the members expenses online. This is not disclosure but merely category totals. Tell's us absolutely nothing.
