The opening of Thunder Bay’s first dedicated bike lane on Court Street is just the beginning of improving access to the city’s roads for cyclists, said city officials.

"The active transportation plan includes at least 34 kilometres to start with in terms of bike lanes," said Mayor Lynn Peterson, who coasted a short distance down the bike lane on Court Street by Boulevard Lake to officially open the cycling route Thursday morning.

While Court Street will act as the learning curve for city planners, bike lanes are already in the works for Walsh Street and Syndicate Avenue in the south core as well as shared lanes in the north side on Fassina Street and the section of John Street from the Expressway to Balmoral Street.

Peterson said it’s about making the community a safe place for bicyclists with the number of them growing in the city.

"We need to meet those needs and this is great way to do it," she said. "It’s healthy. It’s a good way to green your community. It’s great to have a lot of people move around the community safely on the mode of transportation they prefer."

With the lanes being fairly new, there is still some confusion about how motorists and cyclists are to share the road and active transportation coordinator Adam Krupper said there will be an education and celebration day of the lanes Saturday on Bay Street from Algoma to Secord Street starting at 10 a.m. and running until 4 p.m. People will be able to learn about the city’s active transportation plan and have one-on-one conversations with people on the committee about what the lanes means for drivers and cyclists.

"It is a major change to the road," Krupper said. "The road widths have been decreased a little bit. We have parking on one side and we’ve got a strange lane on the other side."]

When people are driving down Court Street, Krupper said they should know there are bike lanes on both sides of the roads, travelling with traffic and there are a few misalignments with the paint lines that will be fixed early next week.

There is also no parking in the bike lanes; you can’t have your vehicle sit or temporarily stop there either.

"People have to know that where there is a bike lane, they can’t park," he said.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers will be enforcing the new parking restrictions.

i am so thankful that my tax $$$ paid for peterson to bike through a ribbon...as well as the 'mistakes' and the fact that we have to pay for them to go back and correct the lines they made!!! what a wonderful way to spend our money

You know, when I first heard about these bike lanes, I thought the city had finally done something I could approve of. What a wonderful idea!

Then I saw them. It's safe to say I don't think that anymore.

AHHH!

Stupid bike lanes!!! Stupid skateboard park!!! Stupid Council!!!

When is real progress gonna happen??????

I look at the stars at night as the son goes down in fright. The coyotes come out to play and say NO to Thunder Bay.

It is time for a change. We need real things for our kids.

Spend less taxes, bring in new jobs, and provide us with more things for our kids

WOW! Some Thunder Bay thinking never fails to amaze me. The true amazement comes from the fact that the "old school" thinking and ideas of what progress is or isn't continues to see “progress” in our community from a "what’s in it for me” attitude instead of "what's going to make our community a better place to live". Do the new bike lanes benefit all; probably not. Are the bike lanes a good use of tax payers’ dollars; maybe. But the real question is what the long range pay offers for the community? Will it promote a healthier life style of living in our community? Yes. Will the initial expense of paint for the lines pay off? Yes. Could these bike lanes be used as a promotional idea for visitors coming to our community and/or considering moving to Thunder Bay? Yes. Therefore, if the old school thinking continues to see “progress” from and individualistic, “what’s in it for me” attitude, is this progress or trying to promote more old school thinking.

Good to see the city moving forward with this initiative. Now, if only we could get every major route through the city equipped with bike lanes.

And anyone who says "...Stupid bike lanes.." obviously has never attempted to commute around this city by bicycle (or any other city for that matter).

Why can they not use the side walks? When I comes into Thunder Bay I don't see to many people walking on them, so why not bike on them. Last time I was in town (Tuesday) There were three people biking on the side walk. No one walking.

@tsb: Because I think they're an accident waiting to happen. Many accidents, actually. This is just my opinion, and I absolutely could be wrong .. and hope I am .. but I don't think it was thought through very well, and some innocent people are going to end up paying for it.

@ultimate warrior: Recreation IS an important part of providing for kids. If kids have productive recreation areas to frequent, they find themselves in a lot less trouble. The skateboard park is a positive, as proven by how many use it and how often. I have yet to go by there and see it unused. There is always a group, and usually a large group, of kids there using it. Those are kids NOT wandering around getting into boredom based trouble.

There are bike lanes like this in cities all over the continent. They actually reduce collisions between bikes and cars. If there are any accidents, it will be because people using the roads in this city don't know how to use the roads in the first place.

@Doug: It is illegal to ride a bicycle with wheels larger than 18 inches in diameter on a sidewalk. I have never been charged with this, but I have been warned before.

"Hello, ladies, look at your city council, now back to me, now back at your council, now back to me. Sadly, your council isn’t me, but if they stopped using ladies scented body wash and switched to Old Spice, they could smell like they’re me. Look down, back up, where is the logic? It’s in another city. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a boat with the city manager your city manager could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s empty promises about that better city to live in thing you love. Look again, the promises are now terrible heartbreak. Anything is possible when your council smells like Old Spice and not a lady. I’m on Thunder Bay passenger rail.”

Some people will do almost anything to get themselves in the news, it would have looked better Ian if you were riding a bike as well.

An education and celebration day as well planned for Saturday, I can only imagine how few will show up for this.

OMG Ryan are you serious with your comment that Could these bike lanes be used as a promotional idea for visitors coming to our community and/or considering moving to Thunder Bay?

I'm well aware that there are bike lands in other cities. And they add them without drastically reducing the width of the car lanes, for starters.

As I said, it's just my opinion, but they worry me. I've driven down Court once since the lanes were added, and saw potential accidents just waiting to happen. There is nowhere near enough space for these to function effectively, neither for the drivers or the cyclists.

Not against Bike lanes

Still Court St. was a dumb idea shoulda put it on Algoma St. and then could make it go straight across town. Not all at once but when work gets done on memorial and may can make the room for bike lanes. That would have been better then emptying out on Fort William Road.

The Bike lanes will be like the paths/trails at Boulevard Lake 3 broad beams abreastwalking on the road giving dirty looks to the people who drive on the roads, end of story! And Oh ya! now the tourists wil come to Thunder Bay.

First I agree the bike lanes are a good idea, I dont agree with how they put them in, court street isnt wide enough for both, the driving lane is really narrow now and i've seen cars very very close to cyclists.

Second, the skate park was a great addition to our city, kids use it all the time, i've never seen any trouble there, the kids even stopped skateboarding to pay their respects during the military ceremony. Whats wrong with the skate park?
5/31/2010 3:56:27 PM
giveuptheywon says:
the bs of this is they can only put them on the streets that are wide enough that they posed no problems before. the ones that were not quite doublelane and wider than normal. do this on any other streets and we better cough up for a bigger ER. Better put out the tender for the stupid overpriced artwork now.
