The city announced Tuesday that bike lanes are being painted on Walsh Street from James Street to Syndicate Avenue, and on Syndicate from Walsh to Brock Streets this week.

A portion of Walsh Street from Kingsway to Edward Street will not be painted due to road construction, but will be completed in September when construction is complete.

Stenciling will be in place by the end of the week. The symbols of bikes and diamonds indicate a dedicated cycling lane.

Lanes in the city’s north side are now complete and the painting of the south side lanes will conclude the pilot project.

For more information on how to use dedicated bike lanes or to see the Active Transportation Plan, visit the city’s website.

Haven't they changed the color of the paint as previously requested by council member Aldo Ruberto, that was a biggie on his to do list for the city.

These dedicated lanes are there, and yet I still see people driving in these lanes, and parking in these lanes. Is the city actually going to start ticketing people who drive in these lanes and institute new parking laws?

I only hope that these lanes do not give riders a false sense of security and they relax their awareness of other traffic. That would render these lanes more dangerous than not having them.

Why put in bike lanes, when people ride on the sidewalks? I was in Thunder Bay a few days ago. Out of ten people two were using the street to ride their bikes.
I say if it don't have a motor they should not be on the street.
I guess in the downtown parts more people walk, so I can see bike lanes there.

How dare that evil city council try to change *thing to which I am accustomed*. Our elected representatives (chosen by 36% of us) OBVIOUSLY hate democracy!!! Hmmmmakesyouthinkinmyhumbleopinionjustathought.

I notices that riders seem to be slow at accepting and using them.
They sure won't go a block out of their way to use them so far.

When you say, "if it don't have a motor they should not be on the street," i say, you couldn't be more wrong. I should be able to walk my 2 dogs and infant daughter down the sidewalk without constantly having to dodge cyclists breaking the law by riding on the sidewalk. That's right, it's the law. And in the winter, when my wife was pregnant, how many times did I have to watch her jump into a snowbank to avoid cyclist too worried about their own safety and no one elses to ride on the street. If you're too nervous to ride where you're supposed to, park your bike and walk. I say, thanks for the bike lanes, let's hope people actually use them so it's safer for everyone.
