Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Services say a short search near Pier 3 resulted in the recovery of the body of a former firefighter.

Ron Talakoski, who spent 18 years with the department, had been reported missing earlier in the evening from St. Joseph’s Care Group, where he resided.

He was believed to have suffered from Shy-Drager syndrome, a potentially fatal illness that attacks the central and autonomic nervous systems.

Talakoski was also a renowned athlete who played nine games with the NHL's New York Rangers between 1986 and 1988, collecting one assist and 33 penalty minutes.

Thunder Bay Police say foul play is not suspected. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.
