Two recent deaths in the Thunder Bay District have been linked to the H1N1 flu virus, health officials confirmed Monday.

Thunder Bay District Health Unit officials confirmed that one adult man and one adult woman have died as a result of the flu virus, and added that both had "underlying medical conditions."
Both were residents of Thunder Bay.

"It is regrettable that the virus has taken the lives of people in our community," said Dr. Samuel Graham, Acting Medical Officer of Health. "Our condolences go out to the family."

The H1N1 flu, also known as the swine flu, and its complications have been more severe among adults under that age of 65 years old with underlying medical conditions. Healthy children between six-months and five-years old, pregnant women and people living in remote and isolated communities are also seen as being at high-risk.

As of Monday afternoon, the Health Unit had confirmed 31 cases of the H1N1 flu virus in this area.

Fears surrounding H1N1 has led to huge lineups at vaccine clinics across the country, including clinics in Thunder Bay.

Additional clinics have been added to the H1N1 scheduled to meet demand for the vaccine.

I have something to say about all of this. My mother was the adult female killed by H1N1 on Monday. I think that these comments are insensitive and uneducated. Get your facts straight! You cannot imagine the void left in my family and my life from this disease.... She just found out she was in remission and 3 weeks later dead from this disease. Either get the shot or not who cares, its personal preferance. I know that if my mother was given the chance she would because it would have saved her life. The whole point of the shot was to protect the children and immunosuppressed and pregnant women. It was not supposed to go to everyone. I am deeply disappointed in this Thunder Bay group and lets see what happens when you or someone you love gets the flu. Senseless death and a tragedy.

Yes, and the flu shot is just a plan by the government to give everyone guion barre syndrome so that GSK can make money.

tsb, I just looked up Mayan calendar. What does it matter, we're all done in 2012 anyhow. Also I found out that we never went to the moon; Bigfoot told the Lock Ness Monster that.

All you have to do is type "alien invasion" into Google and you will see that they live among us. Chbaker, you have to put more effort into internet research than just "type it into Google and see". That's the problem with the internet: People have lost the ability to think critically and learn things properly.

Let's all take a look at the possibilities that Healt Cananda and the WHO were looking at over last spring and summer. A virus that hasn't circulated the human population since 1957 has been found at the end of the flu season. Because of the timing, doctors and scientists are able to come up with a vaccine. Because of the rareness of this virus in the human population, doctors do not know who, how fast or how bad the population will be affected so they try and vaccinate as many people as possible so that if the virus does mutate into something more deadly, the population will have a higher chance at survival.

Doctors and scientist fear a repetition of the Spanish Flu which killed aproximately 50 million people or 3% of the population in 1918. Espicially now human travel is so easy, health organizations are more sensitive to communicable diseases and understand the risks of not imunizing if thing go wrong.

Now I believe that everyone has the right to chose to or not to get vacinated and I support each person in their decision. What I do not support is people downplaying the sevarity of the possibilities of H1N1 or other viruses. I also do not the support people posting opinions as facts on web sites claiming that they are smarter than the thousands of doctors world wide we spend millions of dollars on to keep us safe from dangers we have no ability to understand.

Do your research. Make your decision. Only post facts on both sides of the arguement.

All you have to do is type "Death from vaccine" into google and you will see pages and pages and pages of people who have had ill effects from vaccinations.
Pages from doctors, pages from schools, credited news sources.. The list goes on and on...
Try it.

At the very LEAST, it seems more research and testing is required. As usual.
Im not in a hurry to trust big pharm companies after the way they poison us over and over again with new "miracle" drugs like OxyContin.

Just because you personally haven't heard about it does not mean it hasn't happened. Here's just one article, there's plenty more for the person who takes the time to look for them.

4th death reported in Sweden:
:fourth-vaccine-death-reported-in-sweden&catid=41:highlighted-news&Itemid=105&lang=en

GlaxoSmithKline is reporting that there is a higher than normal side effects rate for this vaccine, relating to a possible 1 in 10 people.

It's interesting that the people who insist it's a personal choice, and that the naysayers shouldn't be trying to impact the decisions of others, are also the first to call down those who choose not to get the vaccine.

The regular, normal, every day flu kills between 250,000 and 500,000 each year. H1N1 has killed approximately 6,000. You can risk your health with an experimental vaccine that flew through safety testing. Some of us would prefer to see the situation for what it is ... a fear inducing media frenzy.

chbaker, and for all the rest of the people who are afraid of conducting the H1N1 virus or having a neurological impairment from the vaccine, please read this article on the myths generated about flu vaccines:

the odds of the vaccine actually getting you sick is roughly one in a million, never mind the astronomical odds of you actually dying from a vaccine without having an allergy to it. Please, for your sake, inform yourself before posting in the future so you don't sound like an idiot.

Hurricanejeck, that's fine. You won't hear me "whine, snivel or complain" when I get the flu. It'll be gone in 4-5 days anyway. But I don't want to hear you whine, snivel or complain when you get cancer in 10 years because you elected to be injected with an inadequately tested vaccine that was rushed into service simply to save the government money. Deal?
The H1N1 craze is fearmongering at its worst. H1N1 itself is not killing people the way some would have you believe. It exacerbates existing medical conditions, yes. But then again, so does the common cold...just ask anyone who suffers from asthma. The scare tactics employed by the government and the media are irresponsible. Preying on the general public's gullibility is disgraceful.

But a question, what happened to pandemics past?
In response to your question and to all the others that are saying H1N1 is just another overblown example of fear mongering. Did you ever stop to think that the strategies used by public health and the provincial government, actually stopped other viral infections from becoming widespread deadly epidemics.
I for one give our local health unit a tip of the hat for helping to make our community safer.
For the people who choose not to take the offered immunization please do not whine snivel or complain when you are ill. I also think that if you are not immunized you should not be allowed to use sick benefits when you call in with the flu.

Thunder Bay seems remarkably well provisioned with H1N1 vaccine. 62,000 doses apparently or more than enough for everyone who likely wants the shot. In a normal season the take-up is around 25,000. Check with your family doctor if you have one - ours took all 4 of us last Friday and gave us the H1N1 and seasonal flu shots. We were in and out of the clinic in 10 minutes. Great work everyone! 10/10.

coldtruth says:
I'd like to start by expressing my condolences to the families of the people who have died from H1N1, but it makes no sense why everybody has such a fear over contracting the H1N1 strain of the flu. H1N1 has been linked to 95 deaths to date in Canada and close to 5000 worldwide. This number is expected to rise in the next 2 months of course, but the estimate of the amount of deaths linked to the seasonal flu in Canada every year is estimated to be between 700 and 2500 and 250,000-500,000 worldwide. reports are that seasonal flu has a mortality rate of less than 0.1% while the swine flu carries a rate of approximately 0.045%. When the facts come in it makes me scratch my head as to why the media continues to blow up the swine flu "pandemic" in order to create a panic among the public instead of educating them on the facts, maybe if the intentions were to educate instead of sell headlines in the news there wouldn't be 2-4 hour lineups to get the vaccine, people wouldn't be in such a panic over the situation.

advocate says:
Curious, the problem is it takes time to come up with a vaccination, and to test it properly. There was only so much that could be made and it was bought on a World Wide basis. So the government can only get its hands on as much as possible.

Hurricanejeck, there are different levels of pandemics. The levels correspond to the concern these viruses can bring to the community. In those other cases (Avian Flu), there was concern that it could become a higher level pandemic, but it never did get to that stage. With H1N1, it is at that stage now. So the difference was that the previous ones had potential to become a problem where H1N1 is a problem.

Hope that answers both of your questions.

Condolences to the families, very sad indead!

But a question, what happened to pandemics past?
SARS, Avian flu west nile and common cold.

I'm not making light of this, but I was just given 'tamiflu' pills by my contractor.

Don't we see a new 'FLU' scare every year?

Radio Canada stated Saturday morning that we have lost more troops to self inflicted terminal casualties than that to have secumb from H1N1. But I've yet to hear the numbers on regular morality vs. new pandemic.

It is sad too loose a loved one, but this hysteria is paramount to dollars into a pocket of the 'pharm' agencies. If in doubt, figure the average production of these doses vs. the readly available product for consumers. Then factor in the idea that it's pattened and not spread across the spectrum to other 'pharm' makers to help humanity.
Again my sympathies to the families that lost loved ones.

Curious says:
I am surprised that after the fear that the Health Unit and gov't have been drilling into us that they have been so unprepared. Sadly, there have been deaths, and if they don't get their act together pretty soon, there willbe more. The shots were supposed to go the most high risk - instead everyone that was healthy enough and able to stand in line for 3 or 4 hours were the ones receiving the vaccines. We are both high risk yet were not able to receive the vaccine because our health did not allow us to stand in line and wait for 4 hours. Get your act together and when you say the most at risk get the vaccine first - then stick to the plan! Start vaccinating the most vulnerable. I also don't understand why physicians aren't getting the vaccines as they usually do so they can vaccinate their patients and lighten to load on the health unit. Also, why aren't schools doing the vaccinating - that also would lighten the load.
