Fine Papers appeals MOE order

The past and present owners of the Superior Fine Papers mill launched an appeal to a Ministry of the Environment-issued work order.
Back in July, Superior Fine Papers, along with former owners Cascades and Thunder Bay Fine Papers, were ordered to immediately repair the industrial sewage works to prevent sludge and waste water from entering into Lake Superior.
The MOE is concerned about a crack in the berm wall of the lagoon. Water levels are low and there has been no discharge at this time into the lake. However, come spring, as water levels rise there is a potential for spill over, says MOE spokesperson Lisa Brygidyr.
She says there is no immediate threat to public safety or health, but there is concern about the fishery and the fact that drinking water is sourced from the lake. Superior Fine Papers has conducted some work at the site, but have yet to meet the conditions of the Director's Order.
Brygidyr says sometimes fines are handed out by the Ministry if the conditions of an order are not met.
Officials from Superior Fine Papers had no comment on the situation.
