No decision on Marathon chemicals
By tbnewswatch.com
Residents in Marathon are still awaiting a decision regarding the millions of litres of chemicals at the abandoned Marathon Pulp facility.
After three days of environmental review hearings in Toronto, no decision has been reached on how to deal with the chemicals at the mill, which has been idled since March. Former mill owner Tembec appealed the original conditions in the maintenance plan, regarding how the company should deal with the waste, referred to as black or green gold.
Before the chemicals freeze, the tribunal must decide on a maintenance plan for the winter. Town council and other parties are trying to come to an agreement on a winter contingency plan pending a full hearing scheduled for spring 2010. The environmental review is scheduled to continue on Monday.
