Wynne wins

TORONTO - Ontario Liberals made history Saturday in electing the province's first female premier, choosing a diplomat over a warrior to lead the embattled party into an uncertain future.

Former education minister Kathleen Wynne won the race with 1,150 votes at the delegated convention, with longtime Liberal Sandra Pupatello finishing second with 866 votes.

Wynne is also making history as the first openly gay premier, a subject she confronted head-on in a dynamic speech that wowed delegates Saturday morning.

Ontario is ready for a gay woman as premier, Wynne told the crowd.

"The province has changed, our party has changed. I do not believe that the people of Ontario... hold that prejudice in their hearts," said Wynne, who is married to Jane Rownthwaite.

She also vowed to recall the prorogued legislature by Feb. 19 and said she would immediately try to meet with the opposition party leaders in an effort to make the minority government work.

There were early signs that Wynne had momentum in the race, nearly tying Pupatello after the first ballot with just two votes between them.

Pupatello got a major boost from Harinder Takhar — widely seen as a stalking horse for the former MPP — and widened her lead after the second ballot.

But Wynne cleaned up as Eric Hoskins, Charles Sousa and finally third-place finisher Gerard Kennedy threw their support behind her, thrusting her to the top from second place.

Sousa's support surprised some observers, who believed the former banker and immigration minister would head to Pupatello's more right-leaning camp.

Sources say Mississauga's 91-year-old mayor Hazel McCallion helped convince Sousa — who holds a seat in the city west of Toronto — to cross the floor to Wynne.

Some speculated that Pupatello's lack of a seat in the legislature and her desire to call a byelection before bringing back the legislature may have turned the tide in Wynne's favour.

Wynne's no-nonsense, professorial style was almost identical to Premier Dalton McGuinty, whose "never too high, never too low" mantra carried the Liberals through nine years of ups and downs.

She may have tapped into a vein of Liberals who want to stick with the moderate, centrist style that's allowed them to maintain power and ward off the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats.

Wynne insists she's different from McGuinty and the right leader for the times.

But as she takes the reins of power from McGuinty, Wynne will also have to deal with the baggage he left behind.

He's alienated a powerful ally the Liberals had courted for years — Ontario's public school teachers — by forcing a pay freeze to reduce the province's $12-billion deficit. Public sector unions, who protested by the thousands outside the convention hall, have vowed to use their organizational might to defeat the Liberals in the next election.

McGuinty also left behind a trail of controversies, from the political decisions to cancel two gas plants in Liberal ridings — at a cost to taxpayers of at least $230 million — to a criminal probe of the province's Ornge air ambulance service.

I do not care about a person's sexuality; I do care about a track record and ability to lead...in which neither of which Ms Wynne has distinguished herself; .

Interesting how, when she was campaigning, not a word was said about her sexual orientation. Then she wins, and suddenly it's all gay.

Very strange for someone openly gay who can understand what it's like to have the government dictate what kind of family you can have, to discriminate and vote in favour of the mass slaughter of family pets based on looks.

She should know what it feels like to be discriminated against, not only as a homosexual woman but as a female politician as well. Yet she continues to support "Breed" specific legislation that brings hatred and discrimination on pet owners who have a certain shape of dog.

so now we have a Former education minister as premier.
with the education system in the mess it is that is a great endorsement.
Now call an election. Liberals only voted for this new premier. Let the true election take place so we can all vote who we want as our premier. If it is Wynne so be it.
But letting 2016 people vote for all of Ontario is just not the right thing to do.
I don't care if she is a woman a man straight or not it is not right for her to be premier unless we all get to vote.
Let the best person voted in by all of Ont. take the job.

Both Michael and Bill were Pupatello backers so it's going to be interesting how all this plays out.
Barriers may have been broken down with the win by Wynne but new ones were built

I, for one, am happy that the Liberal Party chose Kathleen Wynn. She does have a record for being a hard worker and did distinguish herself as a Minister of Education. Since she is also a capable meiator, perhaps she will be able to bring all sides together to solve the mess that Broten created. As well, she is far more progressive in her thinking than Dalton McGuinty could ever be.

To N Pike - if you truly were a "life long Liberal, you could not possible consider Tim Hudak - Mike Harris' clone - as a viable option.

To Dan Dan - Kathleen Wynn has been openly gay for a long time. Just because you didn't know doesn't mean she was denying it. It just shows your ignorance.

For all who have a problem with the fact that she is gay, get over it. Her sexuality should have no bearing on her ability to do the job.

well the liberals provincially & federally are the ones that destroyed what is known as the family as it once was, they needed votes to stay in power, now we have a lesbian to run our province, this i will never accept as there is a bill of rites in the canadian charter, liberals & NDP do not like family values, so they can put there poison to others, we need a party that stands up for family values, ty
