It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Robert Halvorsen.

Robert, the son of the late Rebekka Halvorsen, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, in St. Josephs Hospice, at the age of 85 after a very brief illness.

Robert was born Oct. 15, 1925 in Duluth,Minn. He moved to Thunder Bay as a child and attended Central and later graduated from Hillcrest (Port Arthur Technical Institute) High School.

Upon graduation, Robert was drafted into the Royal Canadian Navy where he served with the HMCS Griffon. He was transferred to Cornwallis outside of Halifax, and was discharged at the conclusion of the war in 1945.

When he returned to Port Arthur he worked with different painting contractors, and then joined the Lakehead Public School Board as a painter, retiring in 1992.

Robert married Claire Chester in 1947 at St. Andrews Rectory, and they just recently celebrated sixty three years of marriage on October 4 of this year.

Robert was a simple hardworking man who was completely devoted to his family.  He enjoyed puttering in his backyard, working around his summer camp at SurpriseLake and he attended many a show at the Community Auditorium.

A cold beer was always something he could be seen enjoying after a hard days work or play.

Robert enjoyed 85 good years of health, happiness and independence, only spending six days in hospital his entire life.   Despite his diagnosis, he was driving his famed Buick out to SurpriseLake, right up to August.  He remained upbeat, always had a smile, and enjoyed life to the fullest right up to his 85 birthday party on Oct. 15 of this year.

Robert was pre-deceased by his mother, sister Helen (Turner-Gothard), sister in laws Audrey Spooner, Avril Parsons, brother in-laws Andy Spooner and Ernie Gothard.

He was also pre-deceased by his special shetland sheepdog, McGee.

Robert is survived by his loving wife Claire, his son, Robert Andrew (Charmaine), and his very special only grand-daughter Andrea.  He was loved and will be missed by Tim Miller, Lisa Doff (Brad) and Laura Miller.

He is also survived by sister in law Betty Baccari, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and funeral services for the late Robert Halvorsen will be held on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street. Services are to be complete in the chapel.  A private family internment will follow.
