Mrs. Kaarina Kirsti Sulku, age 69 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 in St. Joseph's Hospice with her family by her side.

Kaarina was born on March 21, 1941 in Kokkola, Finland. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1950, settling in Port Arthur the following year. She was educated locally, graduating from Hillcrest High School and continued on to King's Business College. After school, she helped with the family business “The Finnish Bookstore” and in 1961 founded Lakehead Travel.

As a business woman, she helped many people plan not only their vacations but assisted in reuniting many families in Canada.

Kaarina had a zest for life and was the life of the party. She was a great hostess and loved to entertain. Her love for travel took her all over the world with her family. She and Esko had many happy memories of their travels together. Some of their favourite places were Mexico and Acapulco.

Kaarina was involved with many community groups and organizations such as Nahjus Gymnastics, Port Arthur Theatre Group, Kikurit Folk Dancing and she was past president and board member of the Finlandia Club and ACTA.

Kaarina is survived by her loving husband Esko; children Marita Koskiniemi (Gerry Savard), Richard (Marlene) Koskiniemi and Kari Peuhkuri; grandchildren Seija Ann, Mika, Mariah and Eija and nephews Seppo and Jari Paivalainen.

Predeceased by her parents Paavo and Essi Lehtonen; sister Hilkka (Heikki) Paivalainen and daughter-in-law Brenda Peuhkuri.

A celebration of Kaarina's life will be held on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Hilldale Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jari Lahtinen officiating. Private interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Hilldale Lutheran Church or The Finnish Heritage Building Fund.
