The family of Antonio Calleri is mourning his peaceful passing at St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday, Dec. 6.
Antonio was born in S. Eufemia Lamezia on June 13, 1921. Life on the farm and physical work served him well when a strong young Antonio was called to service by his country during the Second World War. Upon completion of his tour of duty, escaping German occupation, Antonio met and married the love of his life and best friend, Theresa.
Soon after, the two were blessed with two beautiful daughters and the young family immigrated to Canada in 1958 in pursuit of new opportunities, making Thunder Bay their new home. Having established his career as a humble Italian farmer in the beginning, Antonio was required to adapt to a variety of situations and all of the challenges that the rugged Canadian north could serve up. He persevered and dedicated himself to earning an honest living to ultimately building the foundation for a better life for all of those that followed.
A man of deep faith in his God with a special devotion to the Virgin Mary, his quiet determination and strength in character along with his ingenuity are the key attributes that we have been blessed to have known, and that we as family and friends will cherish forever in our hearts.
Antonio is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Teresa, daughters Mary Provenzano and Josephine (Saverio) Nigro, grandchildren Frank Provenzano, Laura (Blaine) Carlson, Frank (Sabrina) Nigro, Leanne (Michael) McLean, and Robert Nigro, great grandchildren Jordan and Parker Carlson, and Sienna McLean, sisters-in-law Maria Mercuri, Rosina Stella and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Sabastiano and Giuseppina, brothers Salvatore and Giuseppe, brothers-in-law Antonio and Frank Stella and Antonio Mercuri, and sisters-in-law Angela Costantino, and Angela Calleri.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9 leaving the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel at 9:10 a.m. to St. Anthony's R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Maurizio Maifredi c.s., concelebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini.
A private entombment will follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Wednesday (this evening) from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring 2 North staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, Dr. DeBakker and Dr. Nigro for their care over the years. In lieu of flowers memorials to the St. Joseph's Foundation or the T.B.R.H.S.C. Foundation - Cardiac Unit would be greatly appreciated.
