With great sadness our family mourns the passing of  a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother Amy Mabel Cumming, age 98, on Thursday, February 3, 2011.

Amy was born June 12, 1912, daughter of the Late John Elias Carle and Florence Ethel Colpitts Carle, pioneer residents of Conmee Township.  Amy, along with brother Charles and sister Mildred were raised in Conmee and proud of their family settling and developing a homestead.

Many times people asked Amy where she met her husband, and told the story that  she met her future husband, John (Jack) Cumming, at a funeral for Jack's grandmother Marion Arril, another pioneer family of Conmee.  Amy and Jack built a home in Conmee, on Hwy. 11/17 near the current Provincial Park, and Amy raised chickens while Jack worked in town at Provincial Paper.

After farming for three years they moved to Port Arthur, lived on Dalton Ave., later building a home at 64 N. Hill St. where they raised their family, son George and daughter Arlene.  Amy's interests were knitting, sewing, crocheting - making sure her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren received an afghan to keep them warm and to remember her love for them.  Amy also enjoyed bowling, carpet bowling, travelling and volunteering at the River Street 55 Plus Centre.

Amy for many years was active member of  the Rebekah Topaz Lodge. As a  member Amy always baked for the teas/bake sales.  A favourite summer event was berry picking with her sister Mildred Cronk, berries could be found near Kakabeka and as far west as Upsala.

Jack and Amy travelled throughout Canada and the USA for many years and spent time in Texas during the winter months where they met many new friends, enjoyed fishing and Amy learned how to paint landscapes and flowers.  During the summer Amy and Jack spent many hours fishing in Northwestern Ontario and also enjoyed trips to Winnipeg to visit George and family.

After Jack's death Amy kept busy with all her activities and helping friends.  Amy lived independently until she was 96 years old, enjoying activities at P. R. Cook Apartments.  At 96, she said "her age" had caught up with her and slowed down. In the fall of 2008 became a resident of Versa Care and 2009 Bethammi Nursing Home.  During this time she took part in activities and enjoyed visits with family.  One of her favourite things was to tell stories to the Bethammi staff (her loving new friends) a

bout growing up working hard on the family farm, her garden, knitting and travels.  Also, Amy's advice to everyone use sunscreen and wear a hat when fishing or outdoors.  Predeceased by husband Jack, son George, parents John and Ethel Carle, brother Charles Carle, sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Dave Cronk, in-laws Robert J. and Mary Arril Cumming, brothers-in-law Gordon, Norman, Kenneth and Bert Cumming .

Survived by daughter Arlene (Edward) Cheryk, daughter-in-law Connie (Neil) Hiebert, grandchildren Kelly (Patrick) Hein, Shelly Cumming of Winnipeg and Lynn Cheryk. Craig Taylor, Windham, NH; great grandchildren Bradley, Rebecca, Cassandra, Carissa Hein, Winnipeg; Brianne and Matthew Taylor, Windham, NH.  Nieces and nephews Elsie Fernie, Betty Squirrell, Allan Cronk, James Cronk, Jerry Cronk, Lorne Cumming, Bob Cumming and their families.
