Mr. Konrad (Kurt) Hermann Tyralla, passed away peacefully at Dawson Court on Saturday, July 9, 2011, with his family by his side.  


Kurt was born on Nov. 15, 1918, in Sackerschoewe, Germany. He is the last surviving child of Emma (Koenig) and Fritz Tyralla. He served in the Armoured Division of the German army during WWII. In 1948 he met and married Gertrud, the love of his life these past sixty-two years. In 1956 he packed up his family and immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada eventually settling in Thunder Bay.


For many years Kurt was employed by S.J. Hills and Sons as a pioneer Volkswagon mechanic. He was known for his innovative engine modifications. He ended his working career as a Millwright (Local 1151) in 1982.

Kurt was an enthusiastic member of the German Canadian Association where he could be found dancing and playing the harmonica. His two passions were reading and all things fast: motorcycles and race cars.

He was an avid ice racer and at age 76 was the oldest active member of the Thunder Bay Ice Racing Association.
 


Kurt is survived by his loving wife Gertrud, his daughter Rita (William Murphy), his son Peter (Kathy) and his grandchildren Kurt Murphy (Daniela), Kaija Murphy and Amy Tyralla. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Leni Abend and Martha Nehring, along with numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.

For the past fourteen years he also shared his life with his devoted Dachshund Waldi.
 

Kurt was predeceased by his parents, five brothers and his sister in Germany.


A memorial service for Kurt will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Kurt may be made to the Salvation Army - Thunder Bay.
