Mr. Jeffrey Todd Backen, age 48 years, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Jeff was born in Port Arthur on November 7, 1962 to Mel and Marilyn Backen and was a lifetime resident. He worked for many years at Trans Canada Pipeline with his father. Jeff was very athletic, winning numerous city and Provincial Championships in golf, baseball and hockey. He was recently inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1975 National Champion P.A. Continentals Little League Baseball Team. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved Toronto Blue Jays. Jeff is survived by his aunts Stella and Cindy Backen, uncle Richard Belle of Airdrie, Alta., special friend and companion Brenda Langlois, cousins Andrew Backen and family of Mason, Ohio, David Belle and family of Airdrie, Alta., and Lance and Jessica Backen, friends Mona and Lynn as well as by other extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Mel (Dec. 21, 2009) and Marilyn (April 9, 2011), grandparents Lempi and Asla Backen and Carl and Helmi Lane, uncles Norm and Robert Backen, aunt Carol Bell and cousin Lisa Belle. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Pastor Matthew Diegel presiding. A private entombment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the N.W.O. Sports Hall of Fame or the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
