Miss Catherine Anne Wegenast, age 84 years, passed away peacefully at her residence at Roseview Manor on December 11, 2011. Catherine was born in Port Arthur on October 18, 1927 to George and Vera Wegenast, pioneers in the Port Arthur business community.

After graduating from Port Arthur Collegiate, she earned her degree at the University of Toronto and went on to earn her teaching certificate at the Ontario College of Education. Catherine’s first teaching job was in Timmins where she taught for several years.

After that she returned to the Lakehead where she taught in the Commercial Department at Hillcrest High School for more than 30 years.

She was a lifetime member of Trinity United Church and a dedicated member of the church choir. Catherine was an avid supporter of the arts and music communities in Thunder Bay as well as the local Historical Society.

As a naturalist, she enjoyed bird watching and photography. Fond memories of summers spent as a youngster at her beloved Silver Islet remained with her always, and drew her back for picnics, hikes, and bird watching with friends. Catherine’s travels took her to the four corners of the earth, but her love for our region always brought her home to Thunder Bay. She was a true philanthropist and gave generously to many causes and campaigns.

Catherine was blessed to have a circle of true and devoted friends in her life. She will be lovingly remembered by them, along with family, colleagues and former students. Catherine was predeceased by her parents George and Vera, as well as her brother Bill and his wife Zib.

She is survived by Bill’s children and their families: three nieces Cathy Reid (St. John’s), Jane Londero (Whitehorse), Susan Wegenast (Toronto) and nephew David Wegenast (Ottawa).

A memorial service will be held on Thursday Dec.15, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Trinity United Church with Rev.
