The two fell in love and were married on September 21, 1927. Together they raised five children. Matilda was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church where she was very involved with her church community.

Her main focus in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and she was happiest when spending time with them. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Judith Martin of North Vancouver, Susan (Barry) Gaggiano, Joanne (Lindsay) Eade, and Fred (Lauren) Arnold; grandchildren: Leanne and Tyler Gaggiano, Carson and Statton Eade and Mathew and Christopher Arnold; son-in-law Doug Mortimer of Vancouver, sister-in-law Mildred Arnold as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was predeceased by her husband William, daughter Wendy Mortimer, brothers George and Bill Baxter, sisters Frances MacDonell and Helen Knutson and her parents.

A private memorial service will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church with Pastor David Haberstock presiding.

The inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Joseph's Foundation-Hospice Unit would be appreciated.
