Jim Cook passed away quietly on July 5th, 2012. <br />
<br />
Jim was the third son of Herbert and Mabel Cook.<br />
<br />
Jim was predeceased by his two brothers Jerry (Preston Reid Cook), and Jiggs (John Herbert Cook). He is survived by his wife Dorothy Watt Cook, four children; Tom(Judy) of Calgary, AB, Casandra (Gregg) of Silver Star Mtn, BC, Deborah(Peter) of New Dundee, ON, Robert (Janice) of Winnipeg, MB, ten grandchildren; Jacqueline, Lisa, Richard, Kipling, Ferguson, Scott, Laura, Lindsay, Mackenzie, Mallory , and two great-grandchildren; Caden and Olivia. Jim was born in Port Arthur.<br />

After graduating school, he joined the Canadian Army in 1943 and participated in the Canadian Army Course. In 1944 he became a member of the First Canadian Parachute Battalion. After the war he attended the University of Toronto to study Engineering. Upon his return to Port Arthur he joined Barnett-McQueen Co. During the time with Barnett-McQueen he was in charge of building the Little Pic River bridge.<br />
<br />
It was there that he claimed he lost his hair. In 1961 he started V. B. Cook Company (consulting engineers). The success of V. B. Cook Co, now Cook Engineering, remained a point of pride for him. <br />
<br />
Jim was a member of the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment from 1949-1956, attained the rank of Captain, and acted as Adjutant. He participated fully in the community as part of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce (founding member), United Appeal, and the Port Arthur Gyro Club. <br />
<br />
Jim took great pride in his involvement with the LSSR Senate(honorary member), and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Jim is a fellow, and a life member of the CIMM, past Chair of the Mechanical/Electrical division, and the recipient of the Donald J. McParland Memorial Medal (1983).<br />
<br />
Jim was also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, canoeing, and loved Lake Superior. He enjoyed time with family and grandchildren at their home on the lake. <br />
<br />
A quote from his dear friend Pat Patterson: "We consider you to be a very good friend, an excellent engineer, officer and gentleman. You are a true blue Canadian who has devoted your life to a wonderful wife and family and your career to the betterment of the construction and mining industries in North America. Keep going!" <br />

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. when family and friends will gather at St. John's Anglican Church, Pearl Street for services with Rev. Mary Lucas presiding. Port Arthur Branch no. 5 Royal Canadian Legion will hold their service of tribute in conjunction with the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.<br />
