<p> Our beloved mother and grandmother Irene Sloan passed away peacefully on Thursday Aug. 30, 2012 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.<br /> <br /> Born Marie-Reine Tardif on Dec. 21, 1924 in St. Zacharie de Beauce, Quebec, Irene was no stranger to hard work and resourcefulness. She was a devoted wife and mother and a nurturing grandmother to 13 grandchildren and one great grandson.<br /> <br /> Irene married Terry Sloan on September 3, 1955 in Rapide-Danseur, Quebec and together they had four children. He predeceased her on March 23 of this year.<br /> <br /> She is survived by her children Robert (Salma); Jo-Anne (Bob Edgar); Louis (Fiona Blaikie); and, Maureen (Gavin Shuell); grandchildren Michael, Mathew and Mark Sloan; Nicole Rose-Cooper (Shawn), Mark and Andrea Edgar; Samuel, Amy, Casey and Sophia Sloan, Nicholas Blaikie-Puk; and, Eric and Alexander Shuell; and great grandson Kyle Patrick Cooper as well by siblings Armande Lauzon, Rose Paquet, Sister Adrienne Tardif, Adrien Tardif and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.<br /> <br /> She is also predeceased by her parents Leonidas and Anna Larochelle, siblings Marc-Yvon, Auralie, Yvonne Beaulieu, Armand, Philippe, Louis, Father Emilien Tardif MSC.<br /> <br /> Very devoted to her faith, she was a member of St. Margaret&rsquo;s CWL. Irene was a very active volunteer in many organizations including Telecare, the Club Canadian Fran&ccedil;ais, and the francophone community in Thunder Bay since moving to the city in 1967. She was involved in the establishment of French language schools in the city and encouraged her children to conserve their French language and heritage. She also served as a volunteer with many other community service organizations.<br /> <br /> The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the caregivers at Pioneer Ridge for their care and compassion.<br /> <br /> Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday Sept. 3, 2012 from 6&nbsp;to 8 p.m. in St. Margaret&#39;s RC Church, 88 Clayte Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> Funeral services will be held Tuesday September 4, 2012 when family and friends will gather in St. Margaret&#39;s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Richard Kowalchuk and Rev. Mr. Lyle Manary concelebrating. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, as expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the <a href="http://dewdropinnthunderbay.ca" target="_blank">Dew Drop-In </a>of St. Andrew&rsquo;s R.C. Church or a charity of your choice.<br /> <br /> Arrangements are in care of the Sargent &amp; Son Funeral Directors, 21 N.
