Jewel Violet Code

Posted

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Jewel Violet Code (nee: Einarson). After a courageous battle with cancer she passed at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Jan. 3, 2014 at the age of 65 with her family at her side.

She was a loving and caring person who always had the right words to comfort a friend.

Jewel was born on July 19, 1948 in Fort William. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nurse. She attended nursing school and was in the last graduating class at St. Joseph’s in 1970.

She was a dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurse at Hogarth Westmount and St. Joseph’s until she retired in 2000.

In 1985 she married Ted Code. They enjoyed 31 wonderful years together, went on many adventures and travelled the world.

She was most comfortable in her home and at camp where she could be close to nature. She counted her blessings and was thankful for the littler things. She loved going for long walks, fishing and observing birds, deer and other wildlife.

For many years, Jewel and Ted volunteered for the Thunder Bay Humane Society.

Prior to the new shelter being built, they ran a temporary animal shelter in their home where they adopted out hundreds of animals to loving homes. Every animal that came onto the Code household was treated like a member of the family, and some very lucky ones became permanent residents.

Jewel has a special connection to all animals. She could rarely be found at home without the company of several cats and a dog.

The deer, birds, and squirrels that frequented her back yard accepted her as a friend as she tended to her gardens or enjoyed tea on her porch swing. She is missed by her cats Tiger Lily and Chai lai and her dog Brodie.

Jewel is survived by her husband Ted Code, stepchildren Ted Code (Kim) and Erin Code (Scott), grandchildren Brittany, Aiden, Elia, Keira and Charlotte, brothers Jim Einarson (Pat), Brian Einarson (Michelle) and Brent Einarson, and nieces and nephews Liam, Hailey, Adam and Jordan. She is also survived by many other loving family members. Jewel enjoyed every moment she spent over the years with all close, dear friends, including her long-time friends Patty, Adelina and Doreen.

She is deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She came into our lives for a reason and we are better for having known her. Jewel had a big heart and incredible strength. Her spirit will live in our hearts forever.

A memorial service will be held at Jenkens Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that any donations be made to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.
