Jean passed away Tuesday morning at Roseview Manor at the age of 90. Her life was her family, her friends and her church.

Jean was born and lived all her life in Thunder Bay. She was part of a loving family, her parents Elsie and Anshelm Forslund (both deceased), two brothers and three sisters. Her brothers Ray and Don and her sisters Helen Vance and Gladys Green predeceased her. Jean's only living sibling, her sister Lil McCullough, was with her when she passed. A very heart felt thank you to Lil, her husband Derm and their son Jim for being there that morning.

Jean was educated at Prospect Ave School and Technical High School and she worked at Canada Car during World War II. Jean loved gardening, knitting and crocheting. She also wrote poetry and lovely long letters to friends and family. Jean was proud to be a member of the Catholic Women's League for over 60 years.

In 1980, John Merchant, her husband of 33 years passed away. She was also predeceased by her grandson John Shorrock and her brothers-in-law Bob Vance, Fred Green, Bill Bell and John McFarlane. She is survived by four children - Kris (Terry) Brown, Kathy (Gary) Shorrock, John ( MaryAnn) Merchant and Ken (Krys) Merchant. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Rosemary Bell, Kay McFarlane, AnnaMay Merchant and Betty Forsland and brothers-in-law Derm McCullough, Rev Edwin Merchant S.J. and Don Merchant. Her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends will also remember her fondly.

Sadly over the last few years, dementia took hold and she moved from her home on Matthews St to assisted living at P. R. Cook Apartments and, as the disease progressed, to full time nursing care at Roseview Manor. Jean used to say what made her happy was making someone else laugh. Dementia did not change her love of being with people. The family wish to thank staff from Cook and Roseview for their kind and compassionate caring.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Margaret’s R.C. Church, Clayte Street, celebrated by Rev. Rey Ronquillo. Following a luncheon in the Parish Hall, the interment will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd from 5-6 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Assoc. or Alzheimer Society.
