Stewart, Margaret (Peggy), 84, died peacefully, surrounded by the love of family, those present in body and those present in spirit.

Born in Winnipeg July 12, 1930, she was the second oldest child of Peter and Marion Johnston.  The family moved to Fort Frances Ontario in the 1940s where she attended high school before moving to Port Arthur to attend nursing training at the Port Arthur General Hospital in 1950.  She then became a flight attendant for Trans-Canada Air Lines (Air Canada) and there she met her husband. They settled in Winnipeg and soon started raising their three boys.

During their time in Winnipeg Peggy worked at the St. Boniface General Hospital.  The family moved to Thunder Bay in 1970 where Peg continued to nurse casually. She was always active in her community and volunteered with several charities throughout the years.

One charity that was very close to her was Via Vitae, now known as Hospice Northwest, where she offered palliative support as a dedicated volunteer. She traveled extensively with John and they enjoyed many adventures together. If she wasn’t skiing at Loch Lomond in the winter, she was golfing at the Thunder Bay Country Club or dominating a bridge game somewhere.

Peggy was an elegant hostess and made entertaining look easy. She was well read, compassionate to those in need, and possessed an energy for life that earned her the respect of her friends and the trust and love of her family.

Alzheimer disease did not diminish her love, her charm, her sense of humour or her ability to always maintain her grace and decorum. She was a lady to her very heart.  In the background of the love from her family has been the guidance, advice and friendship of her Pinewood Court family.

For eight years they have worked with us to find gentle and creative ways to manage the progression of her Alzheimer's disease. For this we are ever grateful.

The visits from Elsie McManus of Hospice Northwest added a wonderful dimension to Peggy's final months and we appreciate her dedication and affection for Peggy.

Survived by John, her husband of nearly 61 years, sons Bill (Rosemary Plaskett), Pat (Liz), and Bob (Katherine Poulin.) Also surviving are grandchildren Dylan (Lindsay), Alex, Mitchell, Valerie (Walter Turek), Robin (James Durant), Laura, and great-grand children Jacob, Justin and Jason.  Predeceased by her parents, sister Marion Schmidt, brothers Jim and Peter Johnston, and infant granddaughter Lindsay.

Funeral services will be held Saturday January 31, 2015 at 2:00pm in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street.  As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or Hospice Northwest.

Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
