Dr. John Theodore Gooding passed away peacefully in Roseview Manor on March 25, 2015, at the age of 84. John was born in Barbados in Aug. 24, 1930 to George and Mildred Gooding.

He attended Harrison College in Barbados before coming to Canada in 1948 to study medicine at McGill University. It was here that he met Joan, the love of his life and upon graduation in 1954, the two were married.

In 1956, they traveled to Leicester, England where John pursued a surgical residency. Upon their return to Canada in 1957, John completed his residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal and was admitted to the College of Physicians and Surgeons before settling in Thunder Bay.  John joined the Port Arthur Clinic in 1961 and spent many happy and fulfilling years at the Port Arthur General Hospital as Chief of Surgery and later, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He retired in 2011 after realizing his dream of 50 years in medical practice.

John’s many passions included golfing at the Port Arthur Country Club, skiing at Mt. Baldy and relaxing at Dog Lake with family and friends.  His annual trips to Barbados were always a highlight.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Kathryn (Don) Archibald, Deborah (Peter Hill) and Brian (Joanne) Gooding, grandchildren Jennifer Archibald and Jillian and Charlie Gooding. John was predeceased by his wife Joan, parents George and Mildred, brothers Keith and Geoffrey, and granddaughter Erin Gooding.

A service to celebrate the life of John Gooding will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Archdeacon Deborah Kraft presiding.  As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Roseview Manor for their care and compassion shown to John during his time with them.
