Mrs. Sisko (Ilona) Possakka, age 78 years, passed away peacefully in hospital on Saturday, May 21, 2016.
Ilona was born on September 24, 1937 in Vilppula Finland. She was raised in Vilppula before moving to Canada to Shabaqua, Ontario in her early 20's to work with her aunt and uncle in their restaurant. Ilona was introduced to Juhani Possakka and they were married on May 19, 1962. They ran a dairy farm in Kaministiquia, and had one daughter, Linda, in 1963. They continued to live on the farm after retiring in 1999.
Ilona was a gentle soul, who worked side-by-side, day in and day out with her husband on their farm. They led a quiet life, often staying home rather than venturing out. She was well known for her large spreads of food for everyone who came to visit. Prior to her stroke in 2014, she took on the care of her husband after his illness, and looked after their home on the farm. Her strength was unfailing and her love unconditional.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Juhani; daughter Linda (Al Postma); as well as grand-daughter Mikaela; sister-in-law, Leena Manninen; and also by nephews Teuvo, Raimo, Risto, and Ron Rehula and their families; brothers Reino, Jalo, Veikko, and Raimo Talliniemi and their families in Finland.
Funeral services for Ilona Possakka will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma, with Pastor Jari Lahtinen of Hilldale Lutheran Church officiating. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to Thunder Bay Regional Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
