(Mary) Joan Thompson (nee Stuart) lost her life to early-onset Alzheimer's on June 17.

Joan was born in Kenora in 1946. She graduated with Lakehead University's charter class in 1968. She married Ian Thompson on Lake of the Woods in 1970. She settled to raise her family in Mariday Park in 1982.

Joan taught physical education for four decades, starting at Selkirk and spent most of her years at Sir Winston Churchill CVI, finishing her career at Lakehead's Faculty of Education.

She was passionate about athletics, was a founding member of the Thunder Bay Women's Volleyball League and coached a myriad of sports throughout her career. She was active in SSSAA, managed the Lakehead Express soccer teams and served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club.

Joan was an outgoing, social woman with a passion of family, community and friends. She loved running, being active and being with people. She cherished summers in Clearwater Bay. She will be remembered most for her caring, outgoing nature and for the twinkle in her eye.

Joan is predeceased by her sister Jane Klaray. She is survived by her husband Ian, her children Jon (Krista, Charlie), Scott (Sarah, Tess) and Susie (Frank, Peter); brother Jim Stuart (Carol) and children Joanne (Tyler, Hector), Richard (Stephanie) and Michelle (Doug, Hudson, Brooke); brother-in-law Tom Klaray and children Christine and Michael (Andrea); and The Nickerson Clan.

The Thompson family will be holding a visitation on Wednesday, June 22 at Sargent and Son Funeral Home between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held at the same location the following day at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
