Oscar Stasiuk

The family of Oscar Stasiuk is saddened to announce that he passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at St. Joseph's Palliative Care Unit. Born October 31, 1927 in Fort William, Ontario to Paul and Mary Stasiuk.

Oscar attended local schools and as a young man joined the Merchant Marines in 1946 and traveled the world. Upon returning home, Oscar married the love of his life Alice (Sue) Poperechny on May 7, 1949 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage last May. In 1953 Oscar began his Real Estate and Insurance career with Willport Realty and in 1957 he started a partnership to form Twingate Realty. In 1961 Oscar opened his own Brokerage, Glendon Realty and Insurance, retiring in 1995. During his Real Estate career, Oscar obtained his F.R.I. and C.R.A. designations and served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Fort William Real Estate Board.

Oscar enjoyed visiting and singing to his son Kevin several times a week and was very dedicated to him. Oscar served on the Board of Directors of Community Living Thunder Bay for many years. Oscar loved fishing and hunting at Lac des Mille Lac (Rubins Landing) with his sons and friends for many years. He also loved to fish at Shebandowan with Don, Lisa and Crystal as well as just spending time at the camp. He also enjoyed his weekly poker sessions with his friends and he was a collector, be it stamps, coins, buttons or pins.

Survived by his wife Alice (Sue); sons: Glenn (Jennifer), Don (Kate) and Kevin; five grandchildren: Shawn (Erin), Daniel, Sarah (Roger), Lisa (Travis) and Crystal (Neil Irwin); four great-grandchildren: Jordan and Paige Irwin, Zoey Stasiuk and Audrie Stasiuk; sister-in-law Ann Poperechny; nephews Lynn (Dorothy) Poperechny and David Poperechny; nieces Holly Johnston (Michael) and their son Adam, Paulette Bilcowski (Dan) and their son Michael, Andrea Matwyshyn and children Michael, Mathew, Jamie and Emily (Adam).

Predeceased by his parents, Paul and Mary; a son in infancy; sister and brother-in-law Martha and Graham Johnston; in-laws Tony and Mary Poperechny; brother-in-law Mike Poperechny and sister-in-law Emily (Jack Matwyshyn) and nephew Victor Matwyshyn.

The family wish to thank the staff of St. Joseph's Palliative Care Unit, especially Sherry RN, Dr. Davis and Dr. D. Johnson for their care and concern during this difficult time.

A celebration of Oscar's life will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Jenkens Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Lloyd Ivany officiating. A private family internment will be held at a later date. Memorial donations made to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
