Annie Nellie Lushney, age 77 years passed away peacefully on Monday, March 15, 2010 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Annie was born on May 26, 1932 in Port Arthur to Nellie and John Hyla. She attended Current River Public School and then the Port Arthur Technical and Commercial High School (Hillcrest High School). Out of high school, Annie worked full time at the Port Arthur Shipbuilding Company in the office as a payroll clerk; took time off to start a family, and later returned working part time. She married Joseph (Joe) Lushney on September 8, 1956 and together, shared fifty-four and one-half years of marriage.

Annie loved her role as a mother, homemaker, mentor and friend. She enjoyed her family, sharing her knowledge, wisdom and zest for life with them and especially spending time with the "apple of her eye", grandson Matthew. One of Annie’s favourite hobbies was cross stitching, for which she won several awards at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition –she did excellent work and was very meticulous.

She took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens and always had an assortment of fresh baking on hand. In her earlier years she enjoyed cross country and downhill skiing, curling and bowling. Annie was an avid golfer and a very active member of the Strathcona Golf Course Ladies Club, carrying the title of Club Champion fourteen times over her career. As well as winning several District Ladies Golf titles, she was named Thunder Bay’s first Female Athlete of the Year in 1965; most recently and proudly won the Net Club Championship for 2009 along with her daughter, winning the Low Gross Club Championship. Annie was one of the district’s finest women golfers.

Annie was a long time member of Trinity United Church and Loyal Order of the Moose.

Annie will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by her husband Joseph; daughter Christine (Tom Carew, Sabrina & Samantha); son David (Kathy Barton) and grandson Matthew; sisters-in-law Margaret Hyla and Kay Doran (Harold). Other relatives also survive. She was predeceased by mother & father Nellie & John Hyla & brother Henry.

Funeral Services for the late Annie Lushney will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 19th, 2010 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, officiated by Rev. Randy Boyd of Trinity United Church. Interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening, March 18th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Annie’s memory to Trinity United Church, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
