Lawrence Larsen

Posted

Lawrence, Dad, Grandpa is a man we should all remember for his work ethic and his appreciation for the small things in life.   Lawrence was born at the Port Arthur General on February 19, 1947 to Lawrence and Lillian Larsen of Nipigon.  He grew up in Nipigon and continued his postsecondary education in Thunder Bay at both Lakehead University (Applied Science) and Confederation College (Interprovincial Electrical Journeyman).  Lawrence was proud of his Nipigon/Red Rock roots, and in 2008, he and Faye thoroughly enjoyed connecting with old friends and former classmates at a wonderful highschool reunion of Nip-Rock High, in Red Rock.  Lawrence worked out of union IBEW 402 for many years, and always took pride in his work and trade.   The Larsens have been long-time members of the Westminster United Church family, where Lawrence was actively involved with the Church Board.  Lawrence was also a very dedicated and proud member of the Masonic order and was Past Master of Shuniah Lodge No. 287 AF & AM.   He was a coronated 33rd degree Honourary Inspector General of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.   He currently held the office of Senior Grand Warden in the Superior Lodge of Perfection, Past Most Wise Sovereign of the Rose Croix Chapter of the Scottish Rite, and President of the Masonic Association of Algoma District.   From a very early age, Lawrence’s favourite pastime/hobby was fishing, whether it be trout fishing on the Nipigon River, or pickerel-fishing the many lakes in and around the Thunder Bay area.  His fishing buddies included not only a few select, long-time friends, but also his four children and partners, and his granddaughter.  It was also very typical for him to head out alone, leaving just a short note like "gone to Dog Lake."   He often said he felt close to God sitting in his boat, enjoying what nature had to offer whether it was experiencing a May fly hatch, or watching a beaver at work.  Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Lillian, his parents-in-law, Ernest and Dove Riggs, and various aunts and uncles.   He is survived by his wife Faye, their children Gregory (Tracy Zhou), Allison (Christian Glover), Andrew (Sheri Skerget), and David, granddaughter Candace and her mother Dawn; his brother Chris (Diane), and his sister Florence Dines (Louie); in-laws Roma and Lloyd Hampton, George and Sue Riggs, Ren and Lorraine Riggs, and Jeannette Dampier, and also by many nieces, nephews and cousins.   Funeral services for Lawrence are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010 at Trinity United Church on Waverly Street, with Rev. Susan Ivany of Westminster United Church presiding, complemented with a Masonic ceremony.  Lawrence took great pride in his association with the Masonic order, enjoyed his time with the brethren, was respected by those with whom he associated, and worked tirelessly for the good of the brotherhood.  In September 2009, Lawrence was presented with his 33rd degree in Hamilton, where he was particularly impressed with keynote addresses from two young graduates of learning centres who had previously been dismissed as unteachable.    Flowers are gratefully declined, but those so wishing may make a donation to the "Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation" (Learning Centres for the benefit of dyslexic children), through Sargent & Son Funeral Home in Thunder Bay.  Be at peace, wise man.
