Letter: Bylaw changes favour construction, real-estate companies

Submitted
Thunder Bay TelevisionKeep informed with the Tb Television News hour Weekdays with Barry Third and Marjorie Dowhoshttp://www.tbtv.com

To the editor:

So once again the council will show that it is in service to local real estate developers and the construction industry by removing any input from people in the neighbourhood and allowing unrestricted development.

While I applaud the intention of increasing the residential density in the city, to allow multiplex housing to be put up anywhere will not facilitate this and removing the ability of residents in the immediate area to have any input will only breed contempt for the whole process.

I would urge council to turn this back to administration with instructions to come back with a comprehensive plan on slowly replacing aging neighbourhoods particularly near the downtown cores with modern high density, energy efficient housing that creates the kind of public and private places that people want to actually live and not simply provide rental income for the city's slumlords.

Sometimes it is not the responsibility of government to come up with grandiose projects but merely to administer what is already there efficiently and responsibility for the benefit of everyone not just the influential few.

John Brewer,

Thunder Bay

Thats the vision they have for us. We're all going to be living in small densely packed apartments and take the whisk-tram to the big-box store for our needs.
Ill ponder this more tomorrow while I sit outside and listen to the wind gently rattling the leaves of the trees out here...
Hope things dont go your way, tsb..
(mind you, I dont want sprawl either.. you guys stay in town, ok ?) (lol)

Sprawl??? From where? The increasing population???

Sorry tsb, youre not recognizing the reason why people are sprawling out in the first place. Thats a topic thats not allowed for discussion on this website.

You see though.. we could take of the roads we have.. if we werent wasting our money on pie in the sky projects like the Marina.

Sprawl is not bankrupting our city. People who dont contribute to it are. People who take more than they provide or provided for. Unneccessary spending, increasing size of government and yearly expense budgets.

Ask yourself why has our deficit become so large. Truthfully answer that question and youll see that every city department has cost us more money and demanded more employees, yet the population has not increased..its actually decreased substantially.

We dont need to stack people on top of eachother in order to have a financially responsible and viable city... we need people who dont cost us so much.

We can't take care of the roads we have, and you want to build more? That's like an unemployed person buying a second car when he can barely afford the first!

Urban sprawl is an addiction and it is bankrupting our city. It has to stop.

Thanks John:

Once again our city administration proves there lack of interest in the desires of the Citizens of this city. This council and administration proves constatnly that what the citizens want as a whole is not what they are going to get. They will get what we want them to have. There is a city electio coming and the citizens need to remember that it was this council and administration that made sure there was a gag order put on the citizens by not working diligently to ensure that plabicites where held on major city issues. This the best opportunity to gete citizens input but our Council and adminsitration made that we are kept mute. Plebicites should be held on, proceding with Phase 2 of the Water Front, Proceeding with and stsdies on a Multiplex, The proposed Wind Farm. It is once again proved that this administration does not desreve the support this citizens since, when asked to develop these plebicites the answer is "We have no frame of reference to develop a question from". I submit that is a bunch of hog-wash the concern is that council and administration know tey would not like the answers from the citizens and then their (in isolation) vision of the city of Lynn will not go forward. I believe it is time for a wholesale swap out of this council and Administration for people who truly understand who the Key Stakeholders are, not special interset groups but the citizens themselves.

This is Canada. In case you havent noticed we've got some spare room to expand into.

why higher density? So you can get more taxpayers to steal from? How does higher density improve the quality of life?

Get with it. This isnt Europe, so stop acting like it.
