To the editor:

Parents pull son from school Our son is in Grade 7 at E'cole Gron Morgan School and is having a very positive experience there.

His life has completely turned around since changing from Algonquin Avenue School. His situation there was nothing short of a nightmare.

From the beginning of Grade 2, he had been bullied by many boys; one boy in particular that was at the forefront of this bullying. It continued year after year and although we talked to teachers, vice principals and principals it was swept under the rug each and every time.

We wondered why our son, the victim, should have to leave the only school he had known. When we asked why the bully shouldn't be removed, we were told that wouldn't happen because "every child deserves an education."

We weren't trying to deny this kid an education, we just wanted him to get it somewhere else. Each time my son would come home with black eyes and scrapes, the child involved would be suspended for two days - a mini-vacation for any kid.

We can't completely blame this boy for his actions because he must be lacking parental direction at home.

We called the police. our MPP twice, the board of education, the Ministry of Education and any local official we could think of, to no avail. We finally gave up at the end of November and removed our son from Algonquin.

We are now in the position of wanting to thank this bully as our son's class at Ecole has embraced and welcomed him with open arms. He now has a classroom full of friends and girls that have secret crushes.

Please parents of children who are being bullied: don't believe the "zero tolerance" you hear about at the schools regarding bullying, because it is not true. At least at Algonquin they tolerate bullying and look the other way when the issue arises. Thank you, Ecole Gron Morgan from the bottom of our hearts.

Pam Dekker,
Thunder Bay

I know it's the same for my nephews when they say anything, they are told not to tattle. The bullies should be removed because "every child deserve an education".

Wow ... deja vu.... I too went to Algonquin School way back in 1987 i was in Gr8 and i too was bullied for much of the year! I guess not much has changed in 25 years!!! I still remember the feeling of being bullied after all these years but life goes on and the next year i went to Hammarskjold and met some wonderful friends that iam still friends with to this day!! I am shock to see that in this day and age it is still tolerated after all the anti-bulling campanges! unreal!!

It is unfortunate that Pam Dekker had to move her son to a different school when he was the victim of bullying. However, I am happy to hear that the transition to the new school went well.

There is so much hype everywhere about the "Zero Tolerance" for bullying. I do not buy it one bit. You constantly see commercials or ads for children to speak up if they are being bullied or read pamphlets on ways to prevent bullying, but who steps up and actually does something to stop the bullying. Pam's story is proof that nothing is being done to help the victims.

The bully in this situation is the winner. Now the bully can say to his next victim, "Hey, the last kid had to leave this school because of me and so will you."

Schools must start protecting the victims of bullying and not the bullies. If they don't, the bullying will go away...only because children will stop reporting it because they know that no one will help them nor protect them.

Don't be fooled and think there isnt bullying at Ecole Gron Morgan. There is and it is never dealt with appropriately, but maybe it will be different now with a new Principal at the helm. There is also an elitism between the "frenchies" and English students. Everyone is invloved: students, parents and the teachers. They think the French immersion program and its students are far more superior.

I completely agree racine......EVERY school seems to have an issue with bullying, but it seems to be the a certain class. My daughter still attends Algonquin in Grade 5 because she has a classroom full of fantastic kids and is thriving there. There was absolutely no way she wanted to leave Algonquin. My issue is that the school board and every person that should be protecting my son failed miserably!! I guess I am just grateful to the Grade 7 class at E'cole for being a group of awesome kids!!! I have heard MANY stories of from parents whose children have had issues at all different schools......Something has to be done, that is all I am trying to say!

No matter which school your children are attending they are going to be met with one bully or another, especially when he is an adult. As a parent you have to teach him how to overcome bullies. If I were you Pam I would join the parent/teacher committee; you can do wonders and make positive changes for all who suffer from bullies.

I am fortunate that my son understands that these kids must have issues at home in order for them to feel it necessary to make other kids feel bad, with no guilt or regret. It makes me crazy that these parents of this particular bully just don't seem to care......I believe this kid is screaming out for attention of ANY kind. Great idea MindYourOwn, i have considered joining the comittee....I suppose that is gonna be my next step.
