LETTER: Water rate sticker-shock

By Jim Gamble

To the editor:

I just received my water bill in todays mail and it is a good thing that I was sitting down when I opened it....the total bill for the past 92 days is $161.90 and here is the breakdown of the billing below:

1. Volumetric Charge $42.21
2. Sewer rate Charge is $69.69
3. Fixed Cost Charge is $50.70

This is outrageous and people wonder why the is so much discourse with our mayor and city council and who know when and where this is going to go next, I shudder everytime I open up not only my hydro bill but now my water bill on top of it all.

Jim Gamble,
Thunder Bay

Really Jim? You were shocked and outraged? Considering all your posts here, you are always shocked and outraged. I bet if it was $10 you would have still wrote this letter.

Keep sitting down, it's only going to get worse!! I'm kinda lucky, I have city water but have a septic field so no rip off sewage rates for me, but if water keeps going up, I may just dig a well. Be cheaper for all the yardwork, gardening etc.

If this keeps up it will be cheaper to have your lawn made out of concrete than to try and water it!

Funny you mentioned the sewer charge; I live in the rural area and didn't find out for 11 years that I wasn't supposed to be paying the Sewer Charge on my bill!! I fought the city and managed to get about $2000.00 back, but what ticked me off is they never tell you this.
So if you live in the rural area and have a septic field and are paying the sewer charge call city hall and complain.

Their justification for not informing me was "well you move from the city to the rural area and we don't check that" Really?

Check your bills Rural Folks! You could have a refund coming your way. By the way, they will try and give it to you in the form of a credit, like I wanted a $2000 credit on my bill! Bad enough they didn't give me any interest!

You should write a letter to the editor or better still get Leith Dunick to do an investigative story on it.
It would be interesting to see how many other people were and are getting ripped off like you were.
Considering that the urban population of Thunder Bay has decreased by about 1000 souls since the last census,it may benefit a lot of people.

Also consider that the mayor voted against the tax hike he refers to... this is just him complaining because his vendetta against the former cop.

$54 a month is outrageous?????? Get a grip. Try walking 2 miles each way with a bucket on your head so you can have drinking water for the day.
Turn on the tap.....fresh glass of water. Flush your toilet......gone forever.

Bitching about $1.78 a day (for your entire family) is kinda pathetic. Step back and take a look at what the entire process involves and you'd be amazed that our cost has been so low. The days of subsidized government living are gone.

$161.9 is nothing, my friend just opened hers and it was over $700! I guess that whole avergae billing thing catches up when the water meter actually gets read and then they come looking for the difference....but imagine you paid over? I am certain you would not be getting a check in the mail.

Also note that you are billed quarterly not monthly
