To the editor:

Our city coucil originally said they would build the new arena only if they got money from the government. Now it sounds like it is just going to happen. Or is this just another ploy to stir up issues to keep people off other issues that are more important?

But where should it be located? The Marina, Innova Park, by the airport? Lets follow the money. Who owns these areas? Are they going to come out with some big money from this deal? You better believe they will! Now we have a problem with golf courses. They
don't make money. It's as simple as that. So how about we take Strathcona Golf course and turn that area into the new arena?

Stay with me now! Think about it. There should be plenty of room for parking. There is access to the highway, Hodder Ave, Lakeshore Drive, Arundel Street, so access to it should be fairly simple. I'm thinking there is enough room for this new building and
you could have the staff riding a Zamboni instead of riding lawnmower.

For those that don't like this idea because they like golf; there are two other city locations for golf. Will those other locations start making money? I don't know? But the city isn't losing money on a third golf course. I'm under the impression this cannot be
done at Chapples Golf course because of legal issues. Just avoid the lawsuit and do it at Strathcona.

If the current golfer's can't keep the three courses going then there has to be a change. Doing it at Municipal Golf course isn't good because the taxes will probably hurt the city. That course is not in the city. So the city doesn't collect.

Now, the city doesn't have to buy more land. They use the land they own. The site is away from the city core so crime should not be as rampant as it would be if located at the Marina. One would think that using city owned property would mean the cost of this arena would be that much cheaper since they don't have to buy land. My question now is who from our elected officials is going to look into this and see if this is even possible?

I'm guessing none of our elected officials will be looking into it because this has got to be one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard.

I've heard stupider ones.
Other than the faint hope of returning the north downtown to glory by shoehorning a center down there, there's really not much to grow on it from that point. The marina will be pretty much taken up by the actual marina, the condo and hotel people. Im sure the Blues Fest will be looking for a new home soon.
A vision to a large space such as Strathcona is a good one. How about an event center with additional outdoor attractions such as a driving/putting range (nod to the golfers), walking trails, go-cart track ? , Blues Fest grounds ? Maybe even some kind of rail system shuttling between Strath and Boulevard ?
Even though it has space, Innova has no 'nature' connection .. and isnt that one of the things people say they like about visiting Thunder Bay ?

This has to be the dumbest idea I've ever heard when it comes to the Events Centre. Take away such beautiful green space and a beautiful golf course for a concrete slab and a parking lot? And the easy access idea is ever more moronic. You don't put a building like this at the far end of the city either. Downtown north core is the one and only option and that's exactly where it is going all you Innova Park rooters.

You got that right Gusto!
Steve "O" Just made the case for Innova Park. Who does he think owns the P.A. site and Innova Park? And they say the weed is harmless.

I'd have to agree with gusto on this, unfortunately you dont seem to understand the basis of having an event center in a location like the marina / downtown sector of the city. ALOT more business will benefit from having it downtown, all the restaurants, bars, for post event / game nights are all right there. If you went to Hodder where the golf course is, you would not only lose the best city owned course, like zero businesses aside from the city would benefit. Post game robins donuts.. or movie rental? wee sounds like a great idea (/end sarcasm) All that traffic heavily residential area would be a nightmare anyways. BAD IDEA...sorry.

Funny, if he was going to suggest a golf course, I was thinking he would go to Chapples. At least that is fairly central and already is a "sports hub". I hate to criticize someone with the courage to actually present an idea, but please lets never talk of this idea again!!

You know, this makes a lot of sense. I guess you would rather see the city just blow more money on a golf course that isn't making money. I know! You can just let one of them fall into disrepair and that will be the end of it just like the Conservatory or the Hall on Sprage St. Lets put an arena at the Marina. We can call it the Marina Arena and there will be no parking and people will be pissed off. As for beautiful green space! Come on! You can't enjoy it unless you are golfing. Can't take my dog for a walk there. How about the guy that drove all over it last year. I guess he doesn't like it. Must of been looking for a parking place. Come on people. I guess you people must be golfers. It's a great idea!
