To the editor:

I am the adoptive mother of a boy who will live his life permanently braindamaged by in-utero alcohol exposure due to the addiction of his birth mother.

I'd like to say that no human should be robbed of their life's potential for normal success before they're even born. This has nothing to do with women's rights, or men's rights for that matter. This is really about the ethics of being human and the biology of being a human female on this planet.

This has nothing to do with "non-cognitive lumps in the uterus". This has to do with the reality that that "non-cognitive lump" will be expelled in nine months into a world that will expect and demand that it have normal brain function.

A "non-cognitive lump" subjected to alcohol in- utero will spend its life being punished by the world for not being normal. I marched for women's rights, including the right to safe abortion before most of you were born.

This is about the ethical challenge of being an adult human being. Women give birth, men don't, it's that complicated, or that simple. Step up you young women and fully grow a uterus. If you want to drink alcohol, use birth control. If you want to make a baby, plan it.

No more drinking is the first step to pregnancy and producing a baby with an undamaged normal brain. Don't imagine that this issue is about equal drinking rights with men. As Marilyn Monroe said, " Any woman who wants to be equal with a man is setting her sights too low."

What a powerful well written letter i could not have said it better myself people have glazed over what abortion really is and they don't want to face that it is in fact a human child they are destroying and it is not just a blob inside of them. God Bless you and your son.

I'm pretty sure you missed the point of her letter. It was about FAS not abortion although she touches on the subject but just barely. I'm also pretty sure she says she was an advocate for the right to a safe abortion. Doesn't sound to me like you're much of one for women's rights.

I agree with your letter, but no need to male-bash.

Agreed.

Also, I don't think that those who drink during pregnancy are doing it as some kind of "Women's Lib" or to gain equality with men. But I don't know, I haven't been in their place. My assumption has been that they have addictions and need to take the responsability to recognize that and get help.

This writer seems to be trying to blend a number of issues, ... I see reference to fetal alcohol syndrom, abortion, womens rights and equality.

Ah, ah , ah, we are all equal. But thanks foor pointing out the blatantly obvious while working in your male bashing rhetoric. Do a letter about smoking or bellyflop competitions now.

Sad how you took a powerful and effective lesson and chose to make it a male bashing episode. I sort of agree with the spirit of your letter, but I disagree with your format. I think you demonstrated an overly simplistic view of a complex issue. Unfortunately, that thought process sets back women's rights about forty years - move on and grow up. the issues are much deeper than someone making a simple choice. We dont all come from a place of privilege and the decisions are always that clear cut and simple. Good for you, you have the privilege to sit on your high horse and judge all others. Interesting how you judge others while you chastise those for judging your child.

I personally dont like the tone of this letter. I shake my head when I see pregnant women not only drinking but also smoking. I think that it is very selfish of them. But I am also concerned with a overzealous paranoia about having had a drink while pregnant. Some women may not know that they are pregnant for a few weeks or even a few months. The fact that they may have have had a few drinks shouldnt stop them or overly worry them from carrying their child to term. A recent study affirms that - The final note - just because you got drunk and conceived is not an automatic FAS baby. Most study's show that while that may occur - it is the prolonged exposure ( especially heavy exposure) that has the most dramatic effect.
