LETTER: There are too many city workers for our population

To the editor:

The number of cities in the USA declaring bankruptcy and/or lowering salaries for their public service employees is already staggering and there are numerous more on the horizon.

The most recent is Scranton, Pa., with a population of 300,000 people and includes 400 city employees. They simply cannot afford to pay their city workers and the banks won't borrow them any more money leaving their Mayor with no choice but to raise taxes 78 per cent  (yes 78 poer cent) or to educe all city workers salaries including the Mayor's.

So when you look at our own backyard here in TBAY we have a city of 100,000 people with a public city workforce of 1,855 workers, I have to ask the question, how can we with only a third of Scranton's population, support four and half times more workers with higher salaries then they have ? I think it is a fair question that more of us should be asking of our city council.

I guess you only have to look at how high our property taxes are, to see how our administration is doing it...Simple really, spend, spend, spend, provide increases in wages and benefits to the city workers, and then at the end of the year raise taxes to pay for it..

When you have 1,855 workers and their families that will continue to vote for you  in every election as long as you give them what they want, nothing ever changes...

So here's another question for our Mayor and council, should I be thinking of selling my home now before you raise taxes to the point where I won't be able to give it away?

Margaret MacMillan,
Thunder Bay

the USA census shows Scranton with a population of 76,089 in 2010, not counting the metropolitan area. (which is actually up over 500,000 but they aren't financially responsible for those areas)

They are also a much smaller city in terms of area, 328.5 square km in Thunder Bay, versus 65 square km of land to be responsible for.

The size of a city alone can have a huge impact on the amount of staff needed to maintain services.

So, when you're talking about a city 5x the size (area) and 1.4 times the population, it does make sense that Tbay would have significantly more staff.

nevermind the fact that we have responsibilities to the district, such as ambulance and some social services.

But I do see the point of your letter, and I don't entirely disagree.

I wonder how many of the municipal employees are workers at Thunder Bay Hydro, Thunder Bay Telephone, Thunder Bay District Housing etc and not direct City employees but are counted as such.

Many municipalities in the states do not have the same level of City run organizations that we have in Canada.

Not disagreeing with the point of the letter but I think the information is skewed.

That should be "lend" not "borrow".

Not even close. You have no clue.

I have to wonder why the comparison would be to a US city? Generally the US has lower taxes and offers fewer services to it's citizens. Could you draft a similar comparison to a Canadian city, one who supports many outlaying areas? This comparison is kind of apples to oranges.

I agree that the city should be looking at reducing the number of city workers such as the Forester position, recreation coordinator, the number on council to 6 and the Mayor and the number of administrative positions. If you want to prune start at the top.

I guess research wasn't big on the list of this writer's priorities eh? No mention of county workers, or the fact that many services our city has, in the US would be serviced by State workers? No comparisons versus other communities? Sheesh.

Must have a relative living in Scranton, PA. I wonder what the comparison of universal healthcare is between these two cities located in two different countries?

"...leaving their Mayor with no choice but to raise taxes 78 per cent..."

That is not a given, it is a proposal by the mayor of Scranton to raise taxes by 78% over three years. Quit comparing us to other cities, especially ones in other countries. Now go back to watching reruns of 'The Office' and get get your facts straight...lol

The kinds of responsibilities that cities in Ontario have are very different from those in Pennsylvania. Thunder Bay's city government has far more responsibilities (and less autonomy) than an American city like Scranton, and that necessitates a larger number of city employees.

city council member Pat Rogan said during Thursday's meeting. "This city council is not going to pass a 78 percent tax increase. There are many other ideas for generating revenue."

There is no question our city government is bloated, if you ranked all the cities in Canada by whatever metric you want Thunder Bay would be in the top 10%. To fix this you would need a elected city manager, or a city council that has the political will to make cuts.

Anyone ever think to do the City Of Thunder Bay 'Family Tree'.
Check out how many employees are related. See how many Summer jobs go to Managements children, nephews, nieces, daughters, sons and friends. It's a who's who affair and who's related to who!!!

laughing and giggling little girls and boys who their daddy's and mommy's got them their jobs while qualified people cant even get interviews. The city needs to do some total re shifting of the amount of workers and to cut out the nepotism.
