LETTER: Have city staff cut trees

John Brewer, Thunder Bay
Brake Repairs! Front Ends! Mufflers! Shocks! Not just mufflers - MINUTE MUFFLER, 677 Memorial Avenue. Open Monday-Saturday. Email: tminutemuffler@shaw.caClick here for details.

To the editor:

I’m just wondering why we have an outside contractor trimming trees at Boulevard Lake when the city employees a forester?

We have an inordinate number of city employees who can often be found gathered at one of the coffee shops or making a career out of some job that should have been completed very quickly or yes apparently even sleeping in their trucks (rumour has it). It's no wonder that taxes here are some of the highest in the country.

John Brewer,
Thunder?Bay

Ms. Vescio is indeed an Registered Professional Forester. That does not qualify her to grab a chainsaw and start cutting trees.

If you are that worried about it Mr. Brewer, the City does offer training for citizen pruners to go out and trim trees.
Of course that would mean you would have to stop constantly complaining about things you know nothing about and actually do something for a change.
Both Thunder Bay Hydro and Thunder Bay Telephone employ contractors to deal with vegetation issues and I'm guessing that the City will be doing more with contractors in the future rather than less.
That should help the congestion at your local coffee shop were you are a recognized expert in all things I'm sure.

Yeah, just like, why don't we have the principal teach all the kids and get rid of the teachers, right?

In the knowledge based economy, we don't pay 2 or 3 lower educated workers to do the job but rather hirer 1 very well paid individual to then contract out the work to even lower paid workers. Thus making a mountain out of a mole hill.
I would also like to know from you, where you see all these city workers standing around? Everytime I've seen them their working and yes at time workers do stand around for many reasons, and workers do get coffee breaks. But then again, I am a worker, not for the city though. Maybe you have too much time on your hands and should get a job yourself?
