LETTER: Stop fossil fuel support

To the editor: I really appreciated J.R.

To the editor:

I really appreciated J.R. Shermack’s column on our misguided, embarrassing  government’s decisions to continue supporting fossil fuel development in our country in spite of international growing concerns and its own citizens’ wishes about climate change, knowing full well that there is a booming economy to be developed in renewable energies.

J.R. mentions several dangers we face if our federal government continues supporting the fossil fuel industry.
I just want to add one more danger to his list: if Energy East gets its way with its proposed pipeline, wanting to transport bitumen from Alberta through our region, for refining and exporting in the east, we face the danger of spills in our precious fresh water reserves (lakes and rivers).

And if that were to happen, it wouldn’t be cleanable.

Fresh water is the most precious resource we have here in Canada, let’s add our voice in order to protect it.
To those interested in learning more, I suggest checking out the Thunder Bay chapter of the Council of Canadians on Facebook or Google.

Other groups opposed to this, and active locally, include Citizens United for a Sustainable Planet (CUSP), Environment North and Environment Defence.
