To the editor:?

I am writing in response to a recent tbnewswatch.com article concerning a father and daughter bumped from a Porter flight.

I also had an unpleasant and puzzling experience with Porter. Last year in December returning to Thunder Bay via Porter I arrived early to Billy Bishop airport.

Seeing that a flight was leaving earlier and having no checked luggage I inquired if seats were available.

I was informed that there were but as I had only purchased the fixed price seat it would cost approximately $140 to switch which was more than the original one-way fare.

I declined and waited for the later flight. Shortly before boarding my scheduled flight an anouncement came over the PA system stating that the flight was overbooked and asked that two people give up their seats in exchange for two nights lodging at the Royal York and a $200 credit for future flights.

This makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever business wise and customer service wise.

A call later to Porter resulted only in being told I should have bought the more expensive ticket.

A suspicious person might think that someone was getting a kick-back but I’m sure no such thing took place.

As an aside I had a similar experience with Air Canada two years earlier and was accommodated quickly, pleasantly and with no extra fees.

Rick Hutchens,
Thunder Bay
